This lesson plan has students work in groups to design and conduct a science experiment related to content already covered, such as the periodic table or stoichiometry. Students will write a research report on their experiment and submit it to the website PlantingScience.org to potentially collaborate with scientists and other students. By participating in real scientific research through this website, students can develop skills like critical thinking, data analysis, and scientific communication. Internet safety protocols will be followed, such as limiting personal information shared online. The goal is for the lesson to give students an authentic scientific experience through international collaboration.

Lesson Title Exploring the world of science
Content Area This is be based on any content we have already covered including, the
periodic table, stoichiometry, etc.

Content Standards SC1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the use of
the modern atomic theory and periodic law to explain the
characteristics of atoms and elements..
Technology Standards 1.6.b Original and Remixed Works
Students create original works or responsibly repurpose or remix digital
resources into new creations.

Integrated Technology The students will use Planting Science

Usage Plan Incorporating PlantingScience.org into a lesson can be a fantastic way to

engage students in hands-on, inquiry-based learning related to plants and the
natural world. PlantingScience.org is a resource that connects students with
real scientists, offering them the opportunity to work on research projects and
experiments.
By incorporating PlantingScience.org into your lesson, you provide students
with a unique opportunity to engage in real scientific research, foster a
deeper appreciation for plant science, and enhance their scientific inquiry and
communication skills. This hands-on, interactive approach to learning can be
both engaging and educational for students
Design Features a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and
often beyond their school:
Students will engage in authentic scientific inquiry by participating in real
research projects with scientists through PlantingScience.org. Students will
develop critical thinking, data analysis, and scientific communication skills.

b.Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data

and or producing original products as a result of engaging in a project):
The students will conduct their own research and creation a research or
experiment design to share with the class via Planting Science.

c. Higher-order thinking:
The students will need to apply their prior knowledge of the content to design
a project that they can later collaborate with their peers and other scientist.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about
their product:
They are collecting their own research and conducting experiments and/or
studies to present to their classmates.
Universal Design Offer various ways for students to demonstrate their understanding and
Rationale creativity, such as written assignments, oral presentations, multimedia
projects, or discussions
Offer opportunities for collaboration with peers, as some students may
engage more when working with others
Lesson Idea In this lesson, the students will be in groups and pairs. The goal of the lesson
is that they will come up with an idea to perform a study or experiment based
around the content we have already learned in class. This is a very open-
ended project so they can have a wide range on their discoveries. Once they
finish their research and study, they will write a research report.
After they have finished the report portion of the activity, the students will then
go on Planting Science and submit their research. The goal in this portion is
for the students to find inspiration and also find other interesting topics their
peers may have posted.
Internet Safety When submitting their research, any online content will be very limited when it
comes to identification. Students will not need to share their faces or give out
full names (first name or anonymous works). We will go over internet safety in
class.
Design Reflection The lesson impacts student learning as gives them an opportunity to conduct
research and collaborate on an international level as we are using the
internet. To further this lesson, maybe some of the students can present and
publish their studies if they choose to pursue that route.
