Review of Related Literature

The first literature review focuses on the factors and motivations

influencing Grade10 learners in choosing senior high school (SHS) tracks

at Handumanan National High School. By analyzing previous studies,

the review aims to understand the decision-making process and

motivations behind track selections. The findings can be used to inform

policies, career guidance programs, and curriculum development

initiatives to help students make informed choices for their academic and

career success. The review also suggests recommendations for further

research and interventions to enhance the track selection process for

Grade 10 learners.

Several studies have explored the factors influencing students'

preferences in choosing their preferred senior high school track. For

example, Rio et al. (2023) conducted a descriptive research study. Titled:

“Factors Influencing the Preferences of Grade 10 Students in Choosing

their Preferred Senior High School Track. The results highlighted that

personal interest and job opportunities played significant roles in

students' decision-making process, while family and peer influence had

less impact on their track choices.

In a study by Coros and Madrigal (2021) Self-directed learning, self-

efficacy in learning, and academic motivation among public senior high

school students were assessed. The research aimed to identify any

demographic variables that might influence these factors and determine

the correlation between them. The findings provided insights into the

students' self-directed learning, self-efficacy, and academic motivation in

the context of distance learning during the pandemic.

Royo and Lamela (2021) Conducted a descriptive quantitative

survey to understand the factors and considerations influencing the

track preferences of incoming senior high school students. Their study

identified work opportunities, family income, aptitude, personal interest,

school performance, and facilities as influential factors in determining

students' track choices.

Studies conducted by Ahmed et al. (2017), Moneva (2019), and

Nazareno et al. (2019), Have also shed light on the factors influencing

students' career and track choices. Furthermore Ahmed et al. (2017),

Highlighted the impact of students' interest in a subject and the

availability of future job opportunities on their career decisions. In

addition Moneva (2019), Emphasized the need for teachers to guide and

assist students in selecting the appropriate track based on their interests

and goals. Nazareno et al. (2019), Used artificial neural network

approaches to predict the career strand choices of incoming senior high

school students, providing insights for educational institutions to develop

programs beneficial for students' learning in school.

Furthermore, Pusparaj (2022), Explored the factors influencing

student’s decision-making process when choosing subjects for higher

education, emphasizing the role of the family and the importance of

providing career guidance during the transition from Grade 10 to Grade

11.

Abid (2017), Discussed the career decision-making process in

adolescence, highlighting the importance of understanding the steps

involved and potential causes of ambiguity or mismatch in person-

environment fit with regard to careers.

Kaneez and Medha (2018), Emphasized the challenges faced by

Grade 10 learners in selecting suitable careers and the importance of

considering individual environments in the decision-making process.

Lastly, Rukewe et al. (2020), Conducted a qualitative study in

Botswana, investigating the influence of career guidance on the career

choices of secondary students. Their findings revealed a lack of

comprehensive career guidance programs and practices in most schools,

emphasizing the need for improvement in this area and the importance

of providing adequate career counseling services to assist students in

making informed decisions about their future academic and career

paths.

Synthesis

In summary, these studies provide valuable insights into the factors

and motivations influencing Grade 10 learners in choosing senior high

school tracks. While the studies have mostly focused on specific

locations and contexts, their findings contribute to our understanding of

the decision-making process and can inform the development of policies,

career guidance.
