Lesson Duration: 1 ½ hr
Attainment Target 2: Through a project – based approach student will be able to explore methods and
procedure in solving problems relating to textile/clothing fabrics
Science Standards: Apply and use laboratory techniques safely in machine operation
Mathematics Standards: collect, organise interpret and represent data b using a table etc., measuring to
create borders

Learning Objectives
Students will:
a) differentiate among the types of sewing machines
b) identify the main parts of the sewing machine
c) explain the function of each part identified
d) label diagram of the sewing machine
e) observe safety rules when using the sewing machine
Content Outline:
Classroom Safety
Students will plug and unplug machines using proper procedure.
Students will ensure that fingers are kept away from machine needle while sewing.
Activity Highlights:
Engagement
Trader Joe’s machine factory has reported that the student interns are not following the learner
guidelines for machine operation. Student interns have made several errors in the manufacturing
department. They are unaware of the various types of sewing machines, could not identify the parts and functions,
& broken machine needles. As a result of this, minor accidents have occurred from time to time. A survey
was done and findings showed that the machine operation learner guide was outdated. How can we
assist Trader Joe’s machine factory to develop a learner guide suitable for the 21st century Machine
operator?
Focus Questions:
What is/are the identifiable issues here?
What types of sewing machines have you seen? Which of these do you think would be a factory?
What kind of accidents might have occurred?
Why do you think the machine needles were broken?
What are some possible ways to create the learner guide assist Trader Joe?(size, shape, colour,
usability, durability)
What job opportunities exist at Trader Joe’s Machine Factory?
Exploration
A simulation of Trader Joe’s machine factory will be set up in the clothing lab. Students will be placed in
five groups and research (scavenger hunt) the following areas: types, parts, function and use. The
simulated sewing room display and rubric will guide the research. Students will record their findings and
type in Microsoft word paying particular attention to inserting information in a table and inserting
pictures using appropriate ICT tools. They should also examine the display table for other resources they
will need to create learner guide.
Students will explore the following in Microsoft word to be used for the creation of the learner guide:
Layout and colour scheme
Borders
Cover page
Font size and selection
Clip arts
3
Explanation
Each group will present their findings using the multimedia projector. Students will discuss their
findings. They will ask/answer questions to provide clarifications. A summary of the main points will be
highlighted using a concept map.
Elaboration/Extension
1. Revisit the problem and examine possible solutions discussed for Trade Joe’s learner guide.
2. Generate ideas about solving the problem – focusing on size, content, colour, shape, creativity,
durability etc...
3. Select and test the solutions and make modifications where necessary. (*Students will make
prototypes of the learner guide)
4. Peer evaluations
5. Present the final product( Learner Guide)
Evaluation
Students will create a rubric to assess Trader Joe’s operation learner guides based on the learning
objectives. It would also include creativity, use of ICT, collaboration and accuracy of information
presented:
Evaluate: Content, Skills, & final product
Enrichment
0Students will seek the views of other students (non home economics) on the quality of the learner
guide. They will do a survey to collate the responses, after which the learner guide could be published
for use in their clothing and textiles laboratory.
