Power Electronics - OEL - 1

1) The document describes an open-ended lab experiment on designing a controlled rectifier circuit. Students are asked to design the circuit with different firing angles and measure the output voltage and compare it to calculated values. 2) Students also need to calculate the ripple factor for one firing angle case and design a filter to reduce the ripple factor. 3) The document asks students to analyze what would happen if the firing angle is set to greater than 180 degrees and justify their analysis.

Open Ended Lab I
EXPERIMENT NO. 7

Apply the knowledge of convertors to design in lab environment working individually and in group. (CLO-4, PLO-3)

Objective:
Design a controlled rectifier circuit with the given specifications.

Task
1) Design a controlled rectifier circuit, set three different firing angles to trigger rectification.

✔ For Even roll numbers: 30, 70,110,170 degrees

✔ For Odd roll numbers: 40, 60, 80, 120 degrees

2) Find ripple factor for any one case of your choice.

Vrms=162
Vdc=145
Ripple factor=0.49
3) Further design any filter to reduce ripple factor of output.
● Note down output parameters in tabular form.

● Attach output waveform figure.

What will happen if greater than 180 degrees is set for firing angle. Justify your analysis with
implementation.
