Instructions for High Frequency Words Assessment

• Place Fry’s First 100 Words Student Copy in front of student.

• Use a blank sheet of paper to cover words so that only the first column is
showing.
• Have student read the first column from top to bottom pointing to each word
as they read it.
• If student reads most of the words correctly, slide the paper over so they can
read the next column. End the assessment if students are struggling.
• As student reads, teacher circles the words that the student read correctly
and quickly (no sounding out) on the assessment page.
• Teacher also records student name, date and number of words read
correctly.
• To show progress, teacher can retest student at a later date, using the same
assessment, but a different colored pen/marker.
• When retesting, be sure to have student reread all the words (not just
missed words) as students sometimes forget words.

Here are some FUN ways to practice high frequency words!
v Sight Word Snowball Fight: write the sight words you are practicing on separate sheets of paper (we recommend working on
no more than 3 to 5 sight words at a time). Be sure to only write 1 word per sheet. It is helpful to use a mixture of words
your child can read independently and a few they are still learning. For example, you may want to use 9 sheets of paper.
On 3 of them write a word your child can read ie the; On the next 3 pages, write a high frequency word your child is learning
ie is; On the last 3 pages, write another high frequency word ie and. In this example, your child is practicing 3 sight words:
the, is, and. Now crumple up the sheets of paper and throw them at each other! Snowball fight! Next, your child has to open
and read each page before he/she can crumple and throw them at you again.
v Paper Plate Toss: Write sight words on paper plates. Use the plates like Frisbees to throw after reading the word. Run to
collect the plates and repeat.
v Concentration: Make a duplicate set of word cards and play Concentration.
v Tic –Tac-Toe: Write sight words in the tic-tac-toe spaces. Take turns selecting a
space to read. If read correctly, an X or O is placed on the space until someone
wins.
v Sight Word Bingo: Make a game board with sight words. Play Bingo.
v Sight Word Collage: Look for target words in catalogs, magazines or in the newspaper. Cut them out and glue them to a
poster to make a collage.
v Oh SNAP: Put the sight words on flash cards and put the flash cards into a jar (maybe an oatmeal jar). Write the word SNAP!
or just draw a sad face on a few flash cards and put them in the jar also. Kids can play in partners or in groups of 3 or 4.
They take turns pulling a card out of the jar. If they can say the word on the card quickly and fluently, they get to keep the
card. If they struggle, they have to put it back. If they pull out one of the cards that says SNAP! or with the sad face on it, they
have to put back all of the cards they've drawn.
v Coin Toss: Put sight words on the floor. Children take turns tossing a coin onto
a word and then have to say that word.
v Flashlight Words: Tape words on the wall or ceiling. Turn off the lights. Use the
flashlight to shine on the word then read it.
v Beat the clock: how many times can a word be written in 2 minutes, 1 minute, 30 seconds, etc.
v Use a paint brush and water to “paint” the words on a fence or sidewalk. Be sure to read the word before it dries.
v Stepping Stones: Place words on the floor so children walk over them
saying the word as they go to get to the other side of the stream.
v Good Clean Words: Write your words in shaving cream on a counter or some
other surface that can be cleaned safely.
v Rainbow Write Words: Write words in all different colors.
