TIMELINE OF ARNIS HISTORY

1521- the arrival of Ferdinand Magellan’s force was met in battle with a group of islanders, led
by Raja Lapu Lapu, who defeated Magellan using only a bladed weapon
1564- Miguel Lopez De Legazpi witnessed demos of Kali
1570’s- The Spanish returned and this time the Philippines came under Spanish rule unable to
contend with the modern weaponry the Spanish used
1610- the indigenous martial art that the Spanish encountered was not yet called "Eskrima" at
that time. During those times, this martial art was known as Paccalicali-t to the Ibanags, Didya
(later changed to Kabaroan) to the Ilokanos, Sitbatan or Kalirongan to Pangasinenses, Sinawali
("to weave") to the Kapampangans, Calis or Pananandata ("use of weapons") to the Tagalogs,
Pagaradman to the Ilonggos and Kaliradman to the Cebuanos. Kuntaw and Silat are separate
martial arts that are also practiced in the Philippine Archipelago
1764- Spaniards banned the practice of Kali
1873- Renamed as "Arnis"; colorful trapping of defensive armors
1937– Benjamin Luna Lema, forms Lightning Arnis club, teaching Lightning Scientific Arnis
1945- Spanish influence had a pacifying effect on Filipino martial culture, the original warrior
ethos has persisted and remains on the fringes of the art. Arnis “death-matches” were
outlawed as late as 1945 yet, as Mark V. Wiley explains in Filipino Martial Culture, they still
take place in private today.
1958 – 1961– Dan Inosanto begins training in Filipino Martial Arts
1960– Black Eagle Arnis Escrima is founded by Carlos Navarro
1972– Felimon Carburnay, opens the Lapunti Self Defense Club, teaching Lapunti Arnis de
Abanico
1974– Professor Remy Presas publishes Modern Arnis in Manila, Philippines
1975- the National Arnis Association of the Philippines (NARAPHIL) was formed by Gen. Fabian
C. Ver. This organization acted as the first national organization for Arnis in the Philippines
1977– Fifty-seven-year-old Cacoy Canete of Cebu City takes first place in stick fighting during
the Philippines’ first national tournament. Canete repeated the feat two years later, without
getting hit by anyone either time.
1977– Dan Inosanto publishes “ The Filipino Martial Arts.”
1979– The 1st National Arnis Championship is held in the Philippines
1986- ARPHI was established with the vision as NARAPHIL 1989– The WEKAF , World
Escrima/Kali/Arnis Federation, is founded at the 1st World Championships in Cebu
2009- the government of the Philippines declared arnis to be the martial art and national sport
of the Philippines
