All internships should be paid internships

“The expert in anything was once a beginner”

Good morning one and all present here. It is a matter of great privilege for
me that I have got an opportunity to share my views on the topic ‘all
internships should be paid internships’. An internship is a short-term work
experience offered by companies and other organizations for people,
usually students, to get some exposure to a particular industry.

Did you know that around Around 43% of internships are unpaid?
According to the NACE’s 2017 Student Survey Report, since 2013, each
graduating class has had at least 60% of students do an internship during
their time at college. Looking at these figures, one can estimate the amount
of students going for unpaid internships. But is it fair? Internships are
opportunities for students, not only to gain experience but also to build
their resume from an early start. Unpaid internships kill the passion and
exuberance of students early on. Not only for students, companies that
offer unpaid internships can undermine their employer brand and damage
their reputations. Many students are not financially well off, and could
gain a lot from paid internships apart from experience. It is a rudimentary
practice that need serious modifications.
However, the number of paid internships is marginally less compared to
the unpaid internships. As tradition can be hard to shake off, it’s not an
option for many. A major reason for this could be the pressure on
individuals to have a ‘work experience’ during their student life. It also
gives way to cooperates to exploit the raw talent and achieve maximum
benefits. Students eventually opt for unpaid internships because it is an
established norm of the cooperate world. Employers save big on
recruitment cost, hence exploiting the students. A big disadvantage of
unpaid internships is that only individuals from privileged backgrounds
can apply for them, while those trying to make ends meet have to find an
alternative.

In today’s work scenario, good grades are not enough. It’s the extra’s that
put you on top. The extra’s include the experience gained by students
during the course of their studies. Paid internships not only offer
experience, but also gives a reality check to the students. Only when
you’re earning, you can estimate whether the job satisfaction is achieved
or not. Paid internships also act as confidence boosters, allowing
individuals to come out of their shell and experience the cooperate world.
They offer a unique sense of independence, especially financially and give
impetus to the amateurs to better understand their fields and master it. Paid
internships also encourage individuals to produce quality work.
Companies too, look for individuals with an experience of paid internships
as it portrays the seriousness and credibility of the individual. Paid
internships add that little touch of sparkle to your CV to set it apart from
others.

In my opinion, a market for more paid internships is the need of the hour.
Government ventures with paid internships can be a step towards creating
more options for the students. With today’s social media impact, online
paid internships are a cogent alternative for gaining work experience.
Pandemic situation in the world today has changed the workplace scenario
and has made paid work from home options more feasible in today’s time.
Educational sector could encourage paid internships and establish good
relations with cooperates to support the students. Spreading awareness and
making the firms understand the benefits of paid internships should be
encouraged. It could be made mandatory for the cooperates that a
particular percent of their budget has to go to paid internships. Online
platforms offering internships such as Internshala, could be mandated to
provide minimum stipends to the prospective individuals.

Fortunately, people have the powerful tool of social media to guide this
change and I believe with much support, the unemployment rate across the
globe could see a massive decrease and help individuals support their
livelihood.
