Today’s Goal

Dispersion of light

Refraction through a
Spherical Surface
Dispersion of White Light

Dispersion : The phenomenon of splitting of white light

into its component colours on passing through a
refracting medium.

Spectrum : The band of Colours obtained on screen is

called Spectrum.
Dispersion of Light by Prism
Angle of Dispersion(θ)/Angular Dispersion(θ)
Q) The refractive index of violet and red light are 1.54 and
1.52 respectively . If the prism angle is 10o.The angular
dispersion is-

a) 0.02o
b) 0.2o
c) 3.06o
d) 30.6o
Dispersive Power
It is the ratio of Angular dispersion to Mean deviation
(Yellow Colour)
Q) Find angular dispersion & dispersive power if A=10o,
μR=1.58 , μV=1.71, μY=1.65

a) θ=1.1o,ω=0.1
b) θ=1.2o,ω=0.2
c) θ=1.3o,ω=0.3
d) θ=1.3o,ω=0.2
Combination Of Prisms
Dispersion without Deviation
Refraction through a
Spherical Surface
Spherical Refracting Surface

1) Pole 2) Centre of Curvature 3) Radius of Curvature

4) Principal axis 5) Aperture
SIGN CONVENTION: CARTESIAN CONVENTION
• All distances are measured from the pole.
• Distances measured in the direction of incident rays
are taken as positive.
• Distance measured in the direction opposite to that of
incident rays are taken as negative.
• Distances above the principal axis are taken as
positive.
• Distances below the principal axis are taken as
negative.

glass surface (μ = 1.5, radius of curvature=20 cm).The distance
of light source from the glass surface is 100 cm. Find the
position and nature of image.

b) 100 cm, Real
c) 50 cm, Virtual
d) 75 cm, Virtual
Q) An empty spherical flask of diameter 15 cm is placed in
water of refractive index 4/3.A parallel beam of light strikes
the flask.Where does it get focussed, when observed within
the flask?
a) 17.5 cm from C
