Midterm1 F2021

This document provides the guidelines and 5 problems for a midterm exam in an electronics course. Problem 1 involves calculating diode currents in a circuit. Problem 2 involves finding voltages and resistances in a circuit with diodes and an AC signal. Problem 3 involves calculating voltages for a regulator circuit with an input that has a DC nominal voltage and ripple. Problem 4 involves finding ripple voltage, average output voltage, and peak diode current for a bridge rectifier circuit. Problem 5 involves analyzing and plotting the transfer function of a circuit with diodes, then sketching the output waveform for a sinusoidal input.

ECED3201: Introduction to Electronics

Fall 2021- Midterm 1
Guidelines:
• Only one double-sided letter size formula sheet is allowed.
• Questions are not allowed during the exam.
• Any non communicating calculator is allowed.
• The midterm exam is marked out of 20.
• Exam Time: 150 minutes
Problem 1 - [4 points]:
In the circuit in Fig.1, assume a constant-voltage model (VD = 0.7V when D is ON) for the diodes.
a. [4 pts] Calculate the diode currents, ID1, (1.5pts) and ID2 (1.5pts) and verify that your
assumption for the region of operations of D1 and D2 is correct (1pt).

Problem 2 - [3 points]:
Consider VI=8V, vi(t)= 0.05sin1t (V) in the circuit shown in Fig. 2. Assume that the diodes have
a 0.7 V drop when the ac signal vi(t) is reduced to 0.
a. [1 pt] Find the dc voltages VO in the circuit.
b. [0.5 pt] Find the small-signal resistances (the ac resistances rd) of the diodes (consider
identical diodes with n=2 and VT  25mV)
c. [1.5 pts] Write the mathematical expression for the total instantaneous voltage vO(t).

Problem 3 - [4.5 points]:
Figure 3 shows a regulator circuit. D1 has VZO=5V and rZ =100 W and IZK = IZmin =0.5mA. The
input source vS(t) = 25 + 5 sin(260t) (V) (vS(t) has a nominal voltage VS = 25 V and a ripple
equal to vs(t) =5 sin(260t) (V)).
a. [2.5 pts] Find the nominal DC voltage VO (1.5pts) and verify that your assumption for the
region of operations of D1 is correct (1pts).
b. [2 pts] find the line regulation (vo/vs) (1.5pt) defined as the change in vO due to change in the
power supply vS and deduce the total output voltage vO(t) (0.5pt).

bridge rectifier with a filtering capacitor. The average load current is expected to be 30mA. Use
a constant voltage model with VD = 0.7V for the diodes.
a. [3.5 pts] Find the ripple voltage (2.5pts), the average output dc voltage (0.5pt), and the peak
current through the diode (0.5pt), if a 250-F filtering capacitor is used in the circuit.
