Experiment 3 Buck Converter

This document contains instructions for an experiment on a buck converter circuit conducted by students Charlie Tamonda and Dave R. The experiment involves building a buck converter circuit and measuring output voltage and current while varying different circuit parameters. Specifically, the experiment involves measuring outputs at different (1) duty cycles from 20-80%, (2) switching frequencies of 20 kHz and 50 kHz, and (3) load resistances of 10 ohms and 20 ohms. Students are asked to compute theoretical output values and compare to measurements, plotting results.

(A) Buck Converter (Duty Cycle)

1. Make connections of power supply, capacitor, inductor, MOSFET and

load resistor to build the buck converter.
Vin = 50 V, L = 1000 μH, C = 1000 μF, R = 50 Ω, D = 40%, f = 20 kHz
2. Check the circuit connections according to the schematics.
3. Varying duty cycle
I. Set the duty cycle at 40%, and switching frequency at 20 kHz.
II. Calculate the value of the output voltage.
III. Observe and measure the output voltage. Compare with the
calculated value.
IV. Vary the duty cycle from 20% to 80% with the interval of 10%.
V. Measure the output voltage VO for each of the duty cycle.
Compare the measurement with theoretical calculation.
VI. How does the output voltage change when the duty cycle
increases?

(B) Buck Converter (Switching Frequency)

1. Set the duty cycle at 40%, and switching frequency at 20 kHz.

2. Observe and measure the output current ripple ∆iL. Compare the
measurement with theoretical calculation.
3. Increase the switching frequency to 50 kHz. Observe and measure the
output current ripple ∆iL. Compare the measurement with theoretical
calculation.
4. How does the output current ripple change when the switching
frequency increases?

(C) Buck Converter (Load Resistance)

1. Set the duty cycle at 40%, and switching frequency at 20 kHz.

2. Measure the load current IL and output voltage VO when the load
resistance is 10 Ω.
Compare the measurement with theoretical calculation.
3. Measure the load current IL and output voltage VO when the load
resistance is 20 Ω.
Compare the measurement with theoretical calculation.
