1.1 Volumetric Analysis

This document provides the procedure and calculations for determining the molarity and strength of a potassium manganate (VII) (KMnO4) solution using a standard ferrous ammonium sulfate (FAS) solution. A 0.05 M FAS solution was prepared and then used in a titration with the KMnO4 solution. The titration results showed that 19 mL of the KMnO4 solution was required to react with 20 mL of the 0.05 M FAS solution. Using the balanced redox reaction and titration data, the molarity of the KMnO4 solution was calculated to be 0.01 M and its strength was calculated to be 1.58 g/L.

VOLUMETRIC ANALYSIS -1
EXP-1.1
Aim:
To determine molarity and strength of given KMnO4solution, using self-prepared standard
M/20 solution of Ferrous Ammonium salt (Mohr’s salt ).

Theory:
Molecular Equation:

2KMnO4 + 3H2SO4 K2SO4 + 2MnSO4 + 3 H2O + 5[O]

2FeSO4(NH4)2SO4.6H2O + H2SO4 + [O] Fe2(SO4)3 + 2(NH4)2SO4 + 13H2O ] x 5

2KMnO4 + 8H2SO4 + 10 FeSO4(NH4)2SO4.6H2O K2SO4 + 2MnSO4 + 10 (NH4)2SO4

+ 68 H2O
Ionic Equation:
𝑀𝑛𝑂4− + 8𝐻 + + 5𝑒 − Mn2+ + 4H2O
[Fe2+ Fe3+ + 𝑒 − ] x 5

𝑀𝑛𝑂4− + 8H+ + 5Fe2+ 5Fe3+ + Mn2+ + 4H2O

Procedure:
I. Preparation of M/20 solution of FAS:
i. Accurately weight 1.96 g of solid FAS and transfer it to 100 ml SMF. Add 10 ml of
2N H2SO4.
ii. Make up the solution upto 100 ml in the SMF.

II. Estimation of Molarity & strength of KmnO4 using standard FAS solution:
i. Burette solution : KMnO4 solution (unknown solution)
ii. Pipette solution : FAS solution (standard M/20 solution)
iii. Conical Flask solution : 20 ml standard FAS + 20 ml 4N H2SO4
iv. Indicator : KMnO4 (Self indicator)
v. End point : Colourless to pale permanent pink colour.
vi. Room temperature : 250C
vii. Molar mass of KMnO4 : 158 g/mol
viii. Molar mass of FAS :392 g/mol

Result:
i) Molarity of given KMnO4 solution : 0.01 M
ii) Strength of given KMnO4 solution : 1.58 g/L.

Calculation:
I. Preparation of 100 ml M/ 20 FAS solution:
Amount of FAS required preparing M/20 solution
