Bar Feeding Mechanism
Bar Feeding Mechanism
INTRODUCTION
To reduce human effort for repetitive work of cutter pieces of pipes as well as providing a
convenient fixture to support and hold the pipes/rods during cutting. It can be termed as smart
machine. There are many industrial applications where round bar or square bars are required to be
operated on different machines to make machine components such as Shafts, Bolts, Screws, etc.
This needs more and more number of pieces to be cut for mass production of those components.
The bar feeding mechanism is a metal cutting machine tool designed to feed the metal. The
machine is exclusively intended for the mass production and they represent faster and more
efficient way to feed the metal. The clamping arrangement can be varied according to need of
operations suitable. The overall system is compact in size, light weight, modular and flexible to be
used in small works jobs that need batch production. The setup overall configuration can be
adopted by a semi-skilled worker easily and can vary the operations by making certain small
changes. The system even has the potential to add up a PLC system to control its overall working
with ease and with less effort provided. This system has the potential to adopt higher level of
automation if desired in future.
Automation or automatic control is the use of various control systems for operating equipment
such as machinery, processes in factories, boilers and heat-treating ovens, switching on telephone
networks, steering and stabilization of ships, aircraft and other applications and vehicles with
minimal or reduced human intervention. Some processes have been completely automated. The
biggest benefit of automation is that it saves labor; however, it is also used to save energy and
materials and to improve quality, accuracy and precision. The term automation, inspired by the
earlier word automatic (coming from automation), was not widely used before 1947, when Ford
established an automation department. It was during this time that industry was rapidly adopting
feedback controllers, which were introduced in the 1930s. Automation has been achieved by
various means including mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, electronic devices and
computers, usually in combination. Complicated systems, such as modern factories, airplanes and
ships typically use all these combined techniques. Nowadays almost all the manufacturing process
is being atomized in order to deliver the products at a faster rate. This project is designed for
accuracy while cutting MS round bar and for ease while feeding.
Automation has two types:
Full automation and Semi automation: -
In semi automation, a combination of manual effort and mechanical power is required whereas in
full automation human participation is very negligible Mechanical engineering without production
and manufacturing is meaningless and inseparable. Production and manufacturing process deals
with conversion of raw materials inputs to finished products as per required dimensions
specifications and efficiently using recent technology. The primary concern of this system is to
carry out three operations Feeding, Clamping and cutting. The sequenced operations of the system
must be precisely timed. The major work of this system is to slice out large number of jobs in rod
or pipe form according to the batch production. The selection of cutter is based on the stress
calculated considering the pipe or rod material. The material preferred in this system is a PVC
(polyvinyl chloride) pipe for demonstration. But mild steel rods and pipes also are worked out by
using different cutters specifications. The cutter to be used in the machine system has been
considered by calculating the torque required for cutting PVC object by help of the design data
available. With the help of this system the time required to slice the objects like the pipe or rod
will be less the accuracy of slicing or cutting of the material will also be improved. The system
can be handled by semi-skilled operators with ease. The layout of the machine is compact to be
placed in a small workshop.
Problem Statement
Design and development of automatic bar feeding mechanism for various industrial applications.
Objectives:
To design automatic bar feeding mechanism for feeding the metal bar.
To overcome all the drawbacks of conventional feeding mechanism and to make
system automated.

and automation of bar cutting machine”. In today’s industries, several types of machines are
present that can cut single bar at a time. Though single bar cutting machine also differs to its size
and shape. Today automation and increase in production rate is main step companies are
undertaking for faster and cheaper production. Recently during project work they have seen a
machine that can cut a bar (100mm diameter) with automatic feeding and cutting, but machine
they have designed can cut three bars at a time and design of this is unique. This Paper gives the
information regarding the design of the machine and its working. For automatic bar cutting,
Holding and feeding operation Hydraulic cylinders are used. Basic view of this Paper is to in
increase Production rate. In modern life, everyone wants to be quick and fast at every work with
less effort. Companies are demanding various different types of machines that can make their
Production fast and cheaper. Companies demand machines that are automated where human efforts
should be less in order to make the work process cheaper. This paper gives the detail design of the
holding and feeding raw material automatically. The design can hold three bars (25mm diameter)
at a time while automatic feeding and holding is done by hydraulic cylinders. Machine will cut
three bars at a time by automatic feeding and clamping of material using hydraulic system
mechanism. They are using three double acting cylinders from which first two will just clamp and
hold the bars while third cylinder will give the feeding motion for cutting operation. [3]
