The Feasibility of Guava

This document discusses conducting a study on using guava and rosemary extracts to create a natural air freshener. It notes that many commercial air fresheners contain chemicals and have strong smells, while guava and rosemary both have pleasant fragrances and antimicrobial properties. The study aims to determine if an extract from these two plants can be used to create an effective and affordable alternative air freshener without chemicals. It provides background information on guava and rosemary, including their scents and uses. The problem, significance, scope and related literature are also summarized.

The Feasibility of Guava

I conduct this research study since I observed that other public locations are stinky. Not just in public
locations but even in our homes. Some kitchen areas are likewise foul-smelling because of what we
prepare and what we consume. If our kitchen area utensils are filthy, it can trigger disease like
diarrhea. That's why I have actually decided to make an antimicrobial air freshener utilizing natural
materials rather of using some chemical. It will not also be antimicrobial but it will also assist people
due to the fact that they will breathe fresh and scented air. It will also assist individuals by making a
low-priced air freshener. It is very more affordable than other air freshener due to the fact that high-
cost fresheners consists of chemicals unlike the air freshener out of organic products.

It will also by individuals knowing that Guava [Psidium Guajava] and Rosemary [Rosmarinus
Officinalis] can eliminate bacterias and fungis that lots of individuals can benefit. This will be made by
utilizing the 2 natural products; Guava [Psidium Guajava] and Rosemary [Rosmarinus Officinalis] I
utilize Guava [Psidium Guajava] due to the fact that this fruit has a good odor and it can also be
antimicrobial. This will be result to an antimicrobial, sweet and scented air freshener with the mix of
two natural products; the Guava [Psidium Guajava] and Rosemary [Rosmarinus Officinalis] This two
can kill microorganisms and fungis. They are also both fragrant. This would differ from to other
freshener which has strong odors however using organic products which has sweet smells.

Background of the study

All of us understand that air fresheners prevail in automobiles and in our homes. When we have air
fresheners, we feel comfortable because it gives us a fantastic and fresh scent. Air fresheners are
costly that we can not afford. It also consists of chemicals and has a strong smell. That's the benefit
and drawback of air freshener with chemicals.

Air fresheners using organic materials can also give fragant scents like other commercial air
freshener but this one does not contain chemicals and it’s scent is sweet not strong like commercial
air freshener. That is why I’ve conducted this study not just because of sweets smell but also for
people to know that organic materials has an ability to be an air freshener. Guava [Psidium Guajava]
is usually 4 to 12 centimetres long, are round or oval depending on the species. The outer skin may
be rough, often with a bitter taste, or soft and sweet. Varying between species, the skin can be any
thickness, is usually green before maturity, but becomes yellow, maroon, or green when ripe.Guava
fruit generally have a pronounced and typical fragrance, similar to lemon rind but less sharp. Guava
pulp may be sweet or sour, tasting something between pear and strawberry, off-white to deep pink ,
with the seeds in the central pulp of variable number and hardness, depending on species.

Rosemary [Rosmarinus Officinalis] an aromatic evergreen shrub that has leaves similar to pine
needles. Forms range from upright to trailing; the upright forms can reach 1.5 m tall, rarely 2 m.The
leaves are evergreen, 2–4 cm long and 2–5 mm broad, green above, and white below, with dense
short woolly hair. The plant flowers in spring and summer in temperate climates but the plants can be
in constant bloom in warm climates; flowers are white, pink, purple or deep blue.

Both of this two organic materials has a great fragant scent and both had a possibility to be an
alternative air freshener. That’s why I conducted this study.

Statement of the Problem

This project tries to research the feasibility of Guava [Psidium Gujava] and Rosemary [Rosmarinus
Officinalis] extract as an alternative air freshener that will be comparable to the ones which is sold in
markets.

This tries to answer the following:

1. What does Guava [Psidium Guajava ] and Rosemary [Rosmarinus Officinalis] extract can do to
be an alternative air freshener ?
2. Is it comparable to the ones which is sold in the market in terms of :

a. Cost

b. Effectiveness

c. Odor ?

Significance of the study

This project aims to make a product that will be an alternative for local air freshener that contain
chemicals and expensive. This study is concentrating in the fragance and aromatic smell of
Guava[Psidium Guajava] and Rosemary [Rosmarinus Officinalis]. People will save a lot of money
because we will not use chemicals that are expensive.. People will smell fresh and fragrant scent with
just a low-cost air freshener.

Definition of Terms
a. Air Freshener- are consumer products used in homes or commercial products used in
house.buildings and in even in cars that typically emit fragrance. b. Guava[Psidium Guajava] - The
fruit, exuding a strong, sweet, musky odor when ripe, may be round, ovoid, or pear-shaped, 2 to 4 in
long, with 4 or 5 protruding floral remnants (sepals) at the apex; and thin, light-yellow skin, frequently
blushed with pink. he central pulp, concolorous or slightly darker in tone, is juicy and normally filled
with very hard, yellowish seeds, 1/8 in (3 min) long, though some rare types have soft, chewable
seeds. c. Rosemary [Rosmarinus Officinalis] - is a woody, perennial herb with fragrant, evergreen,
needle-like leaves and white, pink, purple or blue flowers, native to the Mediterranean region.
Rosemary has been shown to have antioxidant properties. Antioxidants can neutralize harmful
particles in the body known as free radicals, which damage cell membranes, tamper with DNA, and
even cause cell death. Rosemary oil appears to have antimicrobial properties (killing some bacteria
and fungi in test tubes).
Scope and Delimitation of the study
This study focused on experimenting the effectiveness of the Guava[Psidium Guajava] and Rosemary
[Rosmarinus Officinalis] as an alternative air freshener. This is limited to the use of Guava[Psidium
Guajava] and Rosemary [Rosmarinus Officinalis] and the other ingredients if it would be comparable
to other Air Freshener.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND CONCEPTUAL

FRAMEWORK
Review of Related Literature

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is an evergreen shrub that is grown for its gray green foliage.
Often used as a culinary herb, rosemary is also a popular landscaping plant in many parts of the
world, and some varieties can grow to six feet in height. Smaller creeping varieties make excellent,
dense groundcovers.(S.Elliot,2008)

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis Linn.) is a common household plant grown in many parts of the
world. Rosemary is used for flavoring food, a beverage drink, as well as in cosmetics. In folk
medicine, rosemary is used as an antispasmodic in renal colic and for dysmenorrhoea, in relieving
respiratory disorders and to stimulate growth of hair. Extracts of rosemary relax smooth muscles of
trachea and intestine, and have liver protective and anti-tumor activity. ( Ray Sahelian )

Rosmarinus officinalis, one of the most prized culinary herbs, is a common wild plant of
Mediterranean hillsides, but will also grow as far north as S. England, where the Romans introduced it
originally (although it is commonly said that it had to be reintroduced by the Normans after
1066).(Davidson)

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is widely used as a spice when cooking, especially in

Mediterranean dishes. It is also used for its fragrance in soaps and other cosmetics. Rosemary has
been shown to have antioxidant properties. Antioxidants can neutralize harmful particles in the body
known as free radicals, which damage cell membranes, tamper with DNA, and even cause cell death.
Also in the lab, rosemary oil appears to have antimicrobial properties (killing some bacteria and fungi
in test tubes). It isn't known whether rosemary would have the same effect in humans.(Ehrlich,2011)

Rosemary is one of those wonderful herbs that makes a beautiful ornamental plant as well as a
welcome culinary seasoning. Its Latin name, Rosmarinus officinalis, means "dew of the sea" and
rosemary is most closely associated with the cooking of the Mediterranean area. However you don't
need perfect sunshine, sea mist or even a never ending summer to successfully grow rosemary. In
fact, more rosemary plants suffer from too much attention than from too little.(Iannotti)
Rosemary is an aromatic herb that has a long history of both culinary and medicinal use. Rosemary
grows in bushes with wood-like stems and short, pine like needles. Although this herb resembles pine
in both appearance and scent, it is actually a member of the mint family. Rosemary is a perineal
evergreen that is often grown as an ornamental shrub because of its ability to withstand harsh
conditions.(Bethany Moncel)

Rosemary, (Rosemarinus officinalis), is a delicious and beautiful herb. You can find many varieties to
fit your need: upright and trailing. Use them interchangeably and even grow multiple varieties as each
is distinctly different looking. I use trailing varieties for myherb standards. I braid three stems and use
those as the main stem. It gives a more decorative look to my finished standard.(Amy Jeanroy)

Guava fruits vary in size, shape, and colour, even within the principal species, P. guajava. They range
from the size of an apple to that of a plum, and may be round or pear shaped, rough or smooth
skinned, and greenish-white, yellow, or red in colour. Large, pear-shaped, white ones are considered
the best. The fruit has an outer and inner zone, the latter with many small gritty seeds. The taste is
acid but sweet, with an unusual aromatic quality partly due to eugenol, an essential oil found also in
cloves. Unripe guavas are astringent, but if picked when nearly ripe they are soon ready to
eat.(Morton, 1987)

Guava is a tropical fruit, cultivated mainly in the Asian countries. It is quite similar in shape to pear
and has a rind that is green in color and changes to yellow when it becomes over-ripe. Inside the rind,
which is consumed along with the fruit and not peeled, there is flesh that is either white or
pinkish/reddish in color. More often than not, you can find lots of small hard seeds enveloping the soft
and sweet pulp of the fruit. Guava is quite rich in Vitamin C, maybe even more than orange, apart
from a number of other vitamins and minerals. Browse through the article to know about the health
and nutrition benefits of eating guavas. (Lily,2009)

Guavas have more vitamin C than citrus fruit; the edible rind alone has five times the vitamin C of
orange.Guavas has a smooth, creamy texture that is akin to an avocado and a flavor that is softly
sweet-sour. The seeds add an astrigent quality to the fruit.Guava can also be eaten unripe.(Bill Daley)

A guava is the sweet fruit of the guava tree, which grows in tropical regions of America and Asia. The
Guava genus consists of about 100 small trees and shrubs in the family Myrtaceae, with the Psidium
species being the most cultivated for food. The guava fruit can be eaten raw or used to flavor drinks,
desserts, and sauces. The guava is rich in vitamins A, B, and C, as well as beta carotene. It can be
eaten raw, either out-of-hand or seeded and sliced in desserts or salads, although cooking eliminates
theguava’s strong smell. (Dellaporta)

There are different varieties of guavas, each with thier own color when ripe. There is the pink guava,
the white guava and the peach-fleshed guava. Most guavas when ripe, the skin is cream coloured.
The variety is determined by the colour of the pulp. The fruit contains many tiny seeds which are
edible. Guavas are a good source of carbohydrates and an excellent source of Vitamin C and fiber. A
guava provides two to three times the amount of Vitamin C than orange juice.(Cynthia Nelson)

Guavas are said to be one of the best fruits available and that’s because they are not only a very rich
source of vitamin C (a guava contains more of this vitamin than a typical citrus fruit – the rind contains
over five times more vitamin C than an orange!), they also contain high amounts of calcium – which is
unusual in a fruit.A fresh guava fruit is also a valuable source of vitamin A and B, nicotinic acid,
phosphorous, potassium, iron, folate and is high in fibre. Coupled with all these vitamins and minerals
(I’m feeling healthy just writing about it!) guavas are also low in fat and calories, with only about 25
calories per fruit.(Greenhouse Girl,2008)

Rosemary is a Mediterranean evergreen shrub which is widely cultivated all over the world for its
aromatic and flavorful leaves. Gardeners also use rosemary as a topiary or large ornamental bush,
because when allowed to grow, rosemary will get quite large, and produce a profusion of white, light
blue, or pale purple flowers. In addition to use in cooking, rosemary is also used in cosmetics and in
aromatherapy treatments, as well as in sachets to keep garments smelling sweet and fresh. The herb
is available in fresh form in some specialty stores, as well as in in whole dried and powdered forms.
(S.E Smith)

Guavas are apple-or pear shaped. The Guava tree can grow up to 12cm long.Guava tastes like a
combination of pear and strawberry. The seeds of guavas are edible. The feijoa is the guava's brother.
It is green and more elongated.A specific type of Feijoa is the pineapple guava. Are tropical fruit so do
not keep them in the refrigerator. Guava and feijoas can be kept for a few days on a fruit bowl at room
temperature. Are a big type of berry.Do not peel guavas because the edible rind contains a lot of
vitamin C. Guava is five times more than an organ. Are great thirst quenchers and contain very much
vitamin C and much iron.(Sholleybabs)

Guava originated in Mexico and South america but is now grown and consumed in all Asian
countries. In Northern Florida, Guava was first cultivated in the early 20 th century. A traditional event
called "Guavaween" is celebrated every year on the last Saturday of the month of October, near Ybor
city, Tampa, Florida, to celebrate the arrival of Guava. This is one of the largest festivals in Ybor. The
major producers of Guava are India, Brazil and Mexico. The best guavas in India are from the city of
Allahabad.(Rajan Jolly)

Guavas are super high in Vitamin C and calcium, a good source of Vitamins A, B, potassium, iron,
folate and is high in soluble fiber with roughly 25 calories per fruit and helps to lower your cholesterol.
These are a super tasting fruit, eat up! (Chef Maven)

Guava is a very popular fruit. It is available throughout the year except during the summer season.
Being very hardy, it gives an assured crop even with very little care. Its cost of production is also low
because its requirements for fertilizer, irrigation and plant protection are not much. Further its nutritive
value is very high. Therefore, it is and ideal fruit for the nutritional security. Guava is also grown as a
backyard fruit to great extent. In India, the best quality guavas are produced in Uttar Pradesh,
particularly in Allahabad region.(Rathore) Gives fragant scent.
