• While carrying out maintenance tasks on the aeroplane, the maintenance manual and standard wiring
practices manuals will contain warnings and cautions that you must obey to protect yourself and the
aircraft from damage

• As with all maintenance on the aircraft we must adhere to good practices when working on EWIS
components otherwise we are putting ourselves and the aircraft in danger

SAFETY PRACTICES

MAINTENANCE PRACTICES STANDARD PRACTICES

INCORECT MAINTENANCE PRACTICES • Tagging connections.

• Failing to attach “do not use tags” when pulling

circuit breakers and switches • Following check lists and procedures.

• Signing off a task without seeing it or checking it

• Wearing appropriate safety equipment.

• Deviating from maintenance manual procedures

based on experience • Using the correct tooling while carrying out tasks.

• Troubleshooting through experience, instead of

using the fault isolation manual

ESDS LRU’s
Have ESDS labels for identification
Have more necessary precautions than non
ESDS equipment
Maintenance manual removal and
installation tasks will have a caution note if
the LRU is ESDS sensitive

FOR TRAINING PURPOSES ONLY

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION OF ESDS DEVICES

 If removing or installing an ESDS device the maintenance manual will give you a task for ESDS handling of
components.

 It will ask you to wear a wrist strap when removing or installing the components

 The Standard Wiring Practices Manual (20-41-01) will give you the part numbers for conductive bags and
conductive dust caps for handling and packing of ESDS devices

TOOLING & SPECIALISED TOOLS

 When working on EWIS we must be careful not to cause damage while using general hand tools.
 For example while removing cable ties we must ensure we do not damage the insulation.

 When we need to use specialised tools you must make sure you know how to use them

 Incorrect procedure could cause damage to EWIS, components and yourself.

 Always follow the maintenance manual for the type of equipment you require.

Below is an extract from the Maintenance Manual referring

to the megohmmeter to be used when completing a fuel
pump insulation check.
• A special megohmmeter is necessary to do the electrical
check with the fuel pump installed on the airplane. The
megohmmeter must have 10 VDC and 500 VDC voltage
supply options with a maximum short circuit current of 5
milliamperes. The model 1864–9700 megohmmeter that is
listed in insulation meter, COM-6457, is recommended

CALIBRATION & CERTIFICATION OF TOOLS

When using any tooling make sure the tool has

serviceable label and it is in calibration. DO NOT USE ANY TOOLING THAT IS OUT
OF CALIBRATION.

DO NOT USE ANY TOOLING THAT YOU

FIND DAMAGED.

FOR TRAINING PURPOSES ONLY

CALIBRATION & CERTIFICATION OF TOOLS

• If you find damaged or unserviceable equipment attach an

unserviceable label and route back to stores.

• Likewise route back all equipment when calibration is

required.

• All tooling should be stored correctly so as to avoid damage.

• Wiring diagrams and system schematic manuals should be

used when troubleshooting defects on the airplane

Required Wiring Checks

Types of Wiring Checks and Applicable Examples

• Continuity – Wrist Strap Continuity Test
• Insulation – Static Discharger Resistance Measurement
• Resistance – Window Heat Film Resistance Check
• Voltage – Rudder PCU Hydraulic Leak Test
• Current – Main Battery Charger Operational Test

MEASUREMENT &
TROUBLESHOOTING

 When carrying out troubleshooting follow

the fault isolation manual. The FIM will
specify what wiring needs to checked.

LRU RE-RACKING PROCEDURES

If you need to re-rack a LRU you must make sure you have power removed from the LRU before carrying out a re-
rack. Follow the maintenance manual:
• Never remove or install a LRU with power on the system you must follow the maintenance manual at all times.

• If you are carrying out fault isolation on a system and you are unable to fault and you wish to carry out troubleshooting,
you may exchange e/e boxes and attach a tag on the suspect unit, and a tag on the good unit

• If the fault transfers you know which box is at fault

CERTIFICATION CONSIDERATIONS

• You must also keep in mind if you replace a LRU component it might affect the autopilot status of
the aircraft

• LB-03-024 gives you the list of LRU’s that effect the CAT status of the aircraft
