Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria inaugurated the first ever ‘gau kumbh’ organized by
Vihangam Yoga institute of Cow Management (A Subsidiary of Vihangam Yoga Sansthan
Prayagraj) in association with Rashtriya Gau Dhan Mahasangh at Ghoramari in Tezpur.
Speaking on the occasion, Assam Governor said cows have always been revered in India and
they are considered useful and beneficial for humans and the environment.
“Through the manufacture and use of cow-based products, not only the economy will be
strengthened but also the environment will be purified,” the Governor added.
On World Veterinary Day, since last year, Just Be Friendly (JBF) has been announcing an award,
the Animal Welfare Field Veterinarian Award. In the year 2023, Bhaskar Choudhary has been
recognized for his outstanding and consistent contribution in the field of Animal Welfare over a
long period of time.
The award is a continuation of the 2022 award where Parag Jyoti Deka was recognized for his
hard work. This award is honoring the individual veterinarian from North-East India, for their
outstanding and consistent contribution in the field of Animal Welfare over a long period of
time. The recognition will glorify their efforts, devotion, and compassion of the veterinarian
towards the cause.

The Department of Medical Education & Research, operating under the Government of Assam,
assumes the crucial responsibility of implementing Ayushman Asom. This department plays a
pivotal role in overseeing the smooth execution and management of the scheme, ensuring its
success in reaching the intended beneficiaries.
Assam Tea, which contributes over 50 per cent of the tea product annually in the country, is
celebrating its 200th year. It was first discovered growing in the wild in 1823 by Major Robert
Bruce.
Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog, in her budget speech for 2023-24, had said roadshows
will be held in major cities across the country as well as abroad to promote Assam Tea as a
brand and showcase the rich socio-culteral heritage of tea garden communities.
The 17th Vande Bharat Express will connect India's Northeastern state of Assam with West
Bengal. This will also be the third Vande Bharat Express to operate in West Bengal after the
NJP- Howrah Vande Bharat Express and the Howrah-Puri Vande Bharat Express. The semi-high
speed train on Sunday for the first time reached Guwahati during the trial run from New
Jalpaiguri.
The train will run between New Jalpaiguri to Guwahati six days in a week, covering around 410
km within 6 hours. The train will depart from New Jalpaiguri in Siliguri and reach Assam's
Guwahati.
Former India cricket captain and ex-BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly was roped in as the brand
ambassador for Tripura Tourism.
The Tripura government is confident that Ganguly will be a successful brand ambassador for the
state. They believe that his popularity and charisma will help to attract more visitors to Tripura
and boost the tourism industry. The announcement came after Tourism Minister Sushanta
Chowdhury met Ganguly at his residence in Kolkata along with state officials, and discussed the
proposal. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, who had earlier spoken to the former ace
cricketer, expressed his confidence that Ganguly’s involvement will greatly benefit the tourism
sector.

Two mountaineers from Assam scaled the world’s third largest peak Mt Kanchenjunga on
Thursday.
Bhaskar Baruah and Jayanta Nath, part of a seven-member team, scaled the 8,586 metres high
peak at 7:15 am after an arduous climb from the summit camp which began at 6:30 pm on
Wednesday
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is the Chef de Mission of the expedition team,
congratulated the duo for scaling the third-highest-mountain-peak.
The team had left for the expedition on April 11 and had set up the base camp at 5,200 metres
after trekking from Taplejung in Nepal on April 20.
The team members had set up three more camps before reaching the summit camp at a height
of 7,500 metres on May 13.
The expedition was sponsored by the state Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare.
Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that Rs 11,000 crores have been allotted for the development projects
in the Northeast.
Speaking on the sidelines of flagging off the first Vande Bharat Express of Northeast, Union
Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that 59 railway stations of the region will be made world-
class.
Keeping in view the concept of ‘Virasat Bhi,Vikas Bhi’, he informed that 310 old train coaches
will be converted to LHB coaches.
A new medical oxygen skill laboratory was inaugurated at Assam Medical College and
Hospital in Dibrugarh.
The Medical Oxygen Skill Lab has been designed to provide hands-on training and skills
development in the use of medical oxygen, a critical element in the treatment of patients with
respiratory illnesses.
The inaugural function held at the OIL lecture hall auditorium of AMCH was attended by
Biswajit Pegu, DC, Dibrugarh, Dr Sanjib Kakoti, Principal, AMCH, Dr Prashanta Dihingia,
Superintendent, AMCH and other dignitaries.
12. Assam Govt to introduce Mising, Tiwa, Rabha languages till class V
According to Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, the Assam government has
been obligated by the National Education Policy (NEP) to provide instruction in the Mising,
Tiwa, and Rabha languages through Class V.
The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) and the Mising Autonomous
Council (MAK) worked together on this project to create 11 textbooks in the Mising language
that are specifically designed for kids in pre-primary and primary school.
This effort demonstrates the Assam government's commitment to putting NEP policies into
action in order to increase education in indigenous languages. The state government has
contributed significantly to the preservation of these indigenous languages while ensuring a
more inclusive and diverse education for kids up to Class V.
Smriti Divas of ‘Bhasar Oja’ Hemchandra Baruah commemorating the death anniversary of one
of the doyens of Assamese language was observed on May 1st.

15. Hriday Hazarika, Nancy win first senior World Cup medals with silvers in Baku
Former junior world champion Hriday Hazarika and Haryana’s Nancy won their first individual
senior World Cup medals, shooting down silver in the men’s and women’s 10m air rifle
competitions.
However, both went down to more accurate shooters on the day. Hriday lost to Hungary’s
Zalan Pekler who shot 252.4 to the Indian’s 251.9, while Nancy, after going into the final two
7 shots with a 0.1 lead over China’s Han Jiayu, could not hold on to the cushion to finish with
253.3 to her opponents’ 254.0.
Sadin-Pratidin Group Chairman and Editor of Asomiya Pratidin, Jayanta Baruah was presented
with the Yogesh Das Memorial Award.
The award was presented to Jayanta Baruah at the 53rd Doomdooma Rongali Bihu Sanmilan
today. The award included an appreciation letter, a memorabilia, a Xorai, a Paat Phoolam
Bihuwan and a Seleng Sador.
17. Elephant calf 'Anjan' named after Assam conservationist turns 5 in UK zoo
Born on May 17, 2018, the calf is named after an Assam-based conservationist, Anjan Baruah.
On Wednesday (May 17), the elephant calf turned 5 years old and the zoo has been awash with
joy. While the calf’s father, Aung Bo, is also with him, who was relocated to Chester Zoo from
Sevilla Exotic Animals Reserve located in Spain, his mother, Thi Ha Way, died in September 2020
due to arthritis problems.
