1. Introduction
Coca-Cola is a popular carbonated beverage brand globally. First launched in 1886, Coca-
Cola has become one of the most widely recognized beverage brands. Coca-Cola was
prepared by pharmacist John Pemberton in the late nineteenth century. Coca-Cola's name
comes from the two original ingredients of this drink: kola nuts (contains a lot of caffeine)
and coca leaves. However, American businessman Asa Griggs Candler later bought the
formula for this drink, and with smart marketing tactics, he turned Coca-Cola into one of the
leading products in the soft drink market. carbonated sweets in the twentieth century.
Currently, Coca-Cola is one of the largest and most popular carbonated beverage brands
globally. This brand has achieved many successes in different fields, including:
a. Revenue growth
b. Diversify products.
c. Effective marketing strategy
d. International expansion
But besides the success of Coca Cola, there are two management challenges that the company
is facing: human resources and environmental management.
2. Body
2.1 Challenges in human resource management
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many impacts on Coca-Cola and companies globally.
Here are some of the main effects this pandemic has had on Coca-Cola:
Decline in sales: The pandemic has led to a decline in sales for Coca-Cola. Travel
restrictions, social distancing and the closure of major outlets such as restaurants and bars
have reduced demand for their products.
Changes in consumer demand: Consumers have changed their shopping and beverage
consumption habits. There is a shift to healthier and lower sugar products, which has affected
sales of Coca-Cola's high-sugar products.
Supply chain adjustments: The pandemic has disrupted supply chains and made it difficult to
produce and deliver products. Coca-Cola had to adjust production processes and supply
management to ensure business continuity.
HR challenges: The company has faced HR challenges amid the pandemic, including
working remotely, keeping employees safe, and adjusting the workforce.
Image and reputational damage: There are instances where Coca-Cola and other companies
have been criticized for how they handled the pandemic, protected employees and provided
support to communities. This can damage the company's image and reputation.
Financial situation and increased costs: The pandemic has impacted Coca-Cola's financial
situation, requiring them to continue operating in a difficult context and adjust resources to
3
minimize the negative impact.
In total, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a series of effects on Coca-Cola, from declines in
sales to changes in consumption patterns and adjustments to their business operations. To
overcome these challenges, Coca-Cola had to take many measures to adapt and recover.
2.2 Measures for human resource management
Coca-Cola and other large companies have adopted many solutions to overcome challenges
caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are some solutions that Coca-Cola could have
implemented:
Enhanced safety and hygiene: The company may have increased safety and hygiene measures
in manufacturing plants, offices, and points of sale. This includes providing personal
protective equipment, ensuring hygiene and social distancing.
Remote work and technology support: Coca-Cola may have implemented solutions to support
remote work for employees, including providing technology equipment and training
programs for managers and employees. employees on how to work effectively remotely.
Changing products and marketing strategies: To respond to changes in market demand, Coca-
Cola may have adjusted its product portfolio and marketing strategy. They could have
focused on healthier drinks and foods.
Emotional and financial support for employees: The company may have provided emotional
and financial support for employees, including counseling and support services for those
experiencing hardship during the crisis .
Training and education: Coca-Cola may have implemented training and education programs
on safety, hygiene, and new procedures related to the pandemic to ensure that employees are
informed and have enough knowledge to work safely.
Management and leadership changes: The pandemic has required a new management and
leadership process. Coca-Cola could have made changes in the way they manage and lead
employees to adapt to the new environment.
Adapting to changes in the workforce: The company may have adjusted the workforce to
meet production and business needs during difficult times, including increasing or reducing
workforce.
Financial and cost management: Coca-Cola may have taken measures to manage finances and
minimize costs to cope with the impact of the pandemic.
All of these solutions help Coca-Cola adapt and cope with the challenges that the COVID-19
pandemic has posed. What matters is the company's flexibility and adaptability in a rapidly
changing and uncertain landscape.
2.3 Environmental challenges
4
Coca-Cola's waste problem is a matter of concern and is receiving close attention from the
community and environmental organizations. With the increasing demand for soft drinks, the
amount of plastic waste from Coca-Cola products is also increasing. Coca-Cola uses millions
of tons of plastic each year to produce bottles, cans and packaging, contributing significantly
to global plastic waste.
It is worth noting that some types of plastic used by Coca-Cola are difficult or impossible to
recycle, causing difficulties in disposing of plastic waste and negative impacts on the
environment. This requires Coca-Cola to make efforts to find and apply sustainable solutions
to reduce the amount of plastic waste.
From 2019 until now, the amount of plastic waste from Coca-Cola's plastic packaging has
surpassed the 2nd and 3rd positions Nestle and Pepsico in the rankings. With nearly 3 million
tons of plastic packaging used in 2020, Coca-Cola is responsible for about 10% of global
plastic waste. This shows the important responsibility that Coca-Cola must take on to reduce
the impact of its products on the environment.
The Break Free From Plastics movement has attracted great interest from thousands of
volunteers globally. In an event in September 2019, 72,000 volunteers collected thousands of
plastic bottles, cups, wrappers, bags and scrap, including 11,732 pieces of trash related to
Coca-Cola. This is a testament to the fact that Coca-Cola products contribute to the plastic
waste problem and that solutions are needed to minimize this impact.
2.4 Measure for environmental challenges
a. Reduce plastic use: Coca-Cola can increase efforts to reduce the use of virgin plastic by
finding and adopting sustainable and recycled alternatives. At the same time, companies can
also consider reducing packaging size and increasing the use of recycled packaging.
b. Recycling and reuse: Coca-Cola can promote recycling and reuse of plastic packaging.
This could include encouraging consumers to reuse bottles and cans, and creating programs
and mechanisms for collecting and recycling plastic packaging.
c. Invest in recycling technology: Coca-Cola can invest in research and development of
plastic recycling technology to reduce the amount of plastic waste and create high-quality
recycled products.
d. Cooperate with partners and environmental organizations: Coca-Cola can cooperate with
partners and environmental organizations to come up with common solutions and carry out
environmental protection activities, such as the program educational programs, trash
collection campaigns, and recycling activities.
e. canvac: Coca-Cola can increase information and education about plastic waste for
customers, employees and the community. This can help create awareness about the impact
of plastic waste and encourage sustainable action.
f. Innovation and research: Coca-Cola can continue to innovate and research to develop new
technologies, materials and production processes to reduce the environmental impact of their
5
products.
