The Problem and Its Scope

RATIONALE

In this sophisticated world, almost all are done with the aid of technology (e.g.,

paying fees). In one mere swipe or tap, payment is done in a matter of seconds.

Gone are the days with long queues where the skin is exposed to the scorching

heat of the sun for hours. With the aid of technology, cashless transactions are

made possible making purchases and payment easier and more convenient

through one single movement of the tips. However, to avail this kind of service, an

application is to be installed which then will serve as an e-wallet i.e., Gcash.

Technological developments have brought many benefits to society and have

influenced people's lives, attitudes and social events. One of the most important

developments in social resilience has been the availability of vast amounts of

information (Fathian 2009). Without the use of information technology, it is not

possible to optimize business activities for all new and long-term careers and

activities. Many global initiatives (e-commerce and e-banking) are underway to

address this phenomenon (Afsharpour 2013). New technologies and broader

global networks, especially the Internet, internal and external networks

(Taghizadeh and Shafigh 2013), are currently being deployed in the areas of digital

economy, online retail, finance and e-banking. Electronic payments are therefore

one of the pillars underpinning e-commerce, and electronic payments without

electronic payments. Payment systems are therefore critical to the success of

monetary policy, which involves financial transactions and their impact on

economic and financial activity around the world. In fact, the payment system is an

important part of the card payment system. G-Cash payments are now required,

especially at the start of the Covid pandemic. Implemented online transactions due

to the ban on close contact. There are many options for transactions that are done

online, making life easier for everyone by not having to travel long distances to the

bank, send or receive money, or pay bills.

There are many aspects that motivate consumers to use Gcash as a payment

method. The researcher in this study wanted to find out how effective is the use of

Gcash. Here it will be discovered if using Gcash as a payment is better than

carrying cash itself. This study will also measure how much consumers trust the

use of Gcash and what are the reasons that motivate ng Gcash. Let's study one

by one what are them to use Gcash. Through this study, the researcher will

examine the perception of students usi the good and bad things about Gcash in

order to clarify the questions about the use of Gcash.

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND

The first theory is Risk Control Theory by Changjun Jiang and Wangyang Yu. This

compendium introduces risk control technologies to online transaction systems

and promotes trustworthy online transaction theory and technologies. This theory

is pertinent to our study because it can help in identifying the potential risks

associated with online payment systems and developing effective strategies to

mitigate them. By adopting the principles of risk control, online payment systems

can be made more secure and trustworthy for users. This can help protect users'

sensitive financial information, maintain trust in the system, and foster greater

adoption of online payment methods, i.e., Gcash.

Two cognitive beliefs are postulated in TAM – perceived usefulness, and perceived

ease of use. TAM also postulates that one’s actual use of a particular IS/IT system

is influenced directly or indirectly by some specific latent variables, such as the

user’s behavioral intentions, attitude, perceived usefulness and perceived ease of

the system. TAM also postulates that external factors affect behavioral intention

and actual use through mediated effects on perceived usefulness and perceived

ease of use. In addition, Consumer Acceptance of Technology model is derived

from TAM, which was also proven as a comprehensive and more powerful tool in

describing and predicting consumer adoption of a particular IT/IS (Amin, Azhar,

Amin, & Akter, 2015).

The reaction and perception of Information Technology (IT) users will influence

their attitude toward acceptance of the technology. One of the/factors that can
influence it is the user's perception of the usefulness and ease of use of IT as a

reasoned action in the context of technology users. Thus, someone's reason for

seeing the benefits and ease of use of IT makes the person's actions / behaviors

as a benchmark in the acceptance of a technology. In general, technology users

will have a positive perception of the technology provided, negative perception

occurs usually because after the user tries the technology or the user has bad

experience with the use of the technology (Rahmah, 2017).

According to Sularso (2012) perceived ease of use for consumers give a direct

impact on attitudes and intentions. Direct influence Ease of use towards attitude

easy to use online purchases, easy purchasing procedures, clear procedures, the

people involved must be positive about online. Because easier process of using

technology for online purchases; the process is easy to understand, easy to use,

the procedure is clear, then consumers will increasingly intend to make purchases

in a way online, with the perception that buying through online will be free of

difficulty or ease. Perception of ease of use based on research conducted by Adi

Triatma (2012) regarding "Trust and Influence Technology Acceptance of

Consumer Interest in Purchases Online (www.kaskus.us case study) ", shows that

perception ease of use has a positive influence on interest consumers to transact

to web retailers.

The second theory is Diffusion Innovation Theory developed by E. M. Rogers. It is

the adoption of a new innovation as influenced by five factors: relative advantage,

compatibility, complexity, trialability, and observability. Relative advantage refers

to the perceived benefits of using the innovation compared to the previous method.
Compatibility refers to how well the innovation fits with the existing values, needs,

and experiences of the adopter. Complexity refers to how difficult the innovation is

to understand and use. Trialability refers to the ability of the adopter to experiment

with the innovation before committing to it. Observability refers to the visibility of

the results of using the innovation.

Moreover, consumers and business owners rely on using mobile payments as their

mode of payment since it is accessible and convenient. In related to this study, it

proposes to investigate the perceptions of consumers in adapting Gcash or e-

payment. More people were adapting e-payments like Gcash more than credit

cards. Gcash are option for Filipinos to do digital financial transactions without

physical cash and credit cards (Zoleta,2021).

The third and fourth theory is the Technological Acceptance Model and Theory of

Reasoned Action. Technological Acceptance Model is a good lens to analyze

software, using for this e-payment systems will result in limited prediction of

consumer attitude as this does not have any productivity measures. Theory of

Reasoned Action is suitable for discussing in adapting of e-payment systems as it

can be extended to more circumstances and can consider other factors influencing

the use of e-payment systems.

According to Central Bank of the Philippines Financial Inclusion survey 2017, few

users of the population utilize banking digital features due to lack of awareness

and trust in terms of security (Lopez 2018). E-payments systems in the Philippines

mostly do not require a bank account and can be easily accessible using mobile
phones. Previous studies on e-payment mainly used the technological acceptance

model as a framework. However, TAM has limited measures on consumers'

attitude that is why we will also use the theory of reasoned action for the

researchers to be able to discuss the other factors that influence consumers to

adapt Gcash as a mode of payment.

Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) is a widely used theory in studying the intention

and adoption of technology (Ajzen, 1991). It is an extension of the theory of

reasoned action, which shows that behavioral intention is influenced by attitudes

and subjective norms. The TBP is ided by three variables, namely attitude,

subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control. Ajzen (1991) stated that these

three variables are antecedents of behavioral intention, such as the adoption of

mobile payment. Ajzen (1991) also stressed that the TPB could be extended to

include other constructs. Attitude is defined as a mental state of readiness

developed through experience. This exerts a dynamic or directive influence on an

individual’s response (Ajzen, 1991). Bansal & Gangwal. (2016) showed that

attitude correlates positively with behavioral intentions to adopt m-commerce

(p−value <0.001). Koloseni & Mandari (2017) stressed that attitude has a direct

and positive influence on adopting mobile payment. A favorable attitude towards

mobile money services can, therefore, boost user’s intention to use the mobile

payment. This study adopts the following as antecedents of attitude in the TBP:

Perceived ease of use (PEOU), perceived usefulness (PU), trustworthiness, and

compatibility. PEOU is the degree to which an individual believes that the use of a

particular system is free of effort (Aslam et al., 2017). Ramayah et al. (2017)
pointed out that attitude towards technology was driven by PEOU. The definition

of interpersonal impact is the friendship between two people. Ramayah et al.

(2017) came at the conclusion that interpersonal influences on expressed

subjective norms a strong favorable connection to the consumers' using mobile

money with the goal to do so. According to study, the most convincing quality of

an individual was one that the potential user deemed vital to employ a mobile

payment application

RELATED STUDIES

The study conducted by Vítor J. Sá et al., (2019), aimed to understand the most

commonly used online payment methods in Portugal. The results of the study show
that there is a shift from traditional shopping methods to electronic payment

methods, which have become more convenient, efficient, and faster due to the

internet.

Another research investigated by Pushp Patil et al., (2020), aimed to determine

the factors influencing mobile payment adoption in India, which included personal

innovativeness, anxiety, trust, and grievance redressal, and found that

performance expectancy, intention to use, and grievance redressal are significant

predictors of consumer mobile payment adoption behavior in India.

The studies mentioned correlate to our research as both focuses on the use of

electronic payment methods and deal with the adoption of digital payments and

the factors that influence it. Although, our research only focuses on consumers and

the use of the Gcash Application as a means of payment, whereas the studies from

India and Portugal focuses on the wider adoption of mobile payments in the

country.

The study "Adoption of E-payment systems in the Philippines” by De La Salle

University states that e-payment systems in the Philippines, such as Gcash and

PayMaya, are easily accessible using mobile phones and do not require a bank

account. This makes them a viable option in a low bank country like the Philippines.

BSP data shows that Filipinos are increasingly using e-wallet and e-payment

systems over credit cards, with platforms such as GCash and PayMaya providing

a digital alternative for financial transactions without the need for physical cash or

credit cards (Zoleta, 2021). The Visa Consumer Payment Attitudes study also
found that 80% of respondents were aware of e-payment systems, indicating that

more Filipinos are becoming aware of and seeing the benefits of contactless

payments (Visa, 2019).

However, despite awareness of digital payment benefits, the number of e-payment

accounts in the Philippines actually dropped, leading to a proposed investigation

of factors affecting adoption similar to the study conducted by Özkan, Bindusara,

and Hackney (2010). This study’s findings are significantly aligned and have a

broaden understanding to the online application option on our research.

In 2011 Globe and Smart (two big telecommunications firms) had approximately

10 million e-money wallets, which had 158 million e-money transactions (GSMA,

2014). Globe introduced mobile money-enabled debit cards linked to clients’

mobile money accounts and launched the Globe Charge platform, which

transformed mobile phones into POS terminals that accepted debit and credit card

payments (Alampay & Bala, 2010). On the other hand, Smart and the Philippine

Long Distance Telephone Company launched PayMaya in 2015, which is a mobile

payment application allowing subscribers to shop online without a credit card

(Alampay & Bala, 2010). In 2015, the Philippine government announced its plan to

transform the Philippines into a “digital payment” society within the next 20 years

(Nair, 2016). According to Nair (2016), the initiatives of Smart and Globe have

enabled 2/3 of the unbanked mobile subscribers to know about mobile payment.

An article by Nikunj Gundaniya (2021), "7 Benefits of electronic payment,"

highlights the advantages of using electronic payment systems in businesses.

These include (1) saving processing costs, (2) better customer convenience, (3)

low risk of theft, (4) transparency, (5) contactless payments, and (6) the ability to

provide payment details to customers beforehand, and (7) the use of contactless

POS terminals, allowing customers to make payments by using QR codes or One

Time Passwords (OTP). This article is significantly aligned to our study as it

advertises the use of electronic payment, which also indirectly advertises Gcash,

helping us promote the app for the greater good.

The Innovative Study of E-Payment Systems Adoption in Higher Education

stated that Individuals using the Internet are benefitted through Internet banking

as it is very convenient compared to the traditional payment methods that use cash

or check for payment transactions while involving queues and physical visits. To

understand the factors affecting e-payment adoption in higher education. It also

mentions on different schools as to know how the students trust, benefits,

expectancy, and their limitations on using the electronic payment to understand

the factors affecting e-payment adoption in higher education. This study helps to

broaden more about the student’s perception about the e-payment and have

similar significance to our research conducted.

Relationship of Security to Consumer Perception of Electronic Wallets Digital

wallets have played an important role in implementing safety and generated a

notable mark in terms of businesses operating in the online industry. This is

because, unlike traditional payments, e-wallets decrease the amount of

paperwork, labor, and time consumed when electronic transactions are concerned

(Deloritos, 2021). Consumer preferences shifted away from traditional payment

methods and toward digital payment methods such as e-wallets because of the

pandemic, which led potential customers to learn about digitalization services.

Users of mobile phones expressed tremendous worry about the security of mobile

payment transactions and the unlawful usage of mobile phones to make payments.

Consumers' top worries about digital payment options were security and privacy

(Dahlberg et al., 2003). In the advent of the COVID-19, Undale et al. (2020) and

other international studies regarding the consumer’s perceived security on e-

wallets during the coronavirus surge are already existent. According to Singh S.

and RanaR. (2017), digital transactions using applications led to behavioral

changes and helped with the adoption of digital payment. Moreover, with the

pandemic forcing individuals to lessen physical contact, people began to adapt to

the changes brought by the pandemic, leading to the use of e-wallets.

E-payment system in the Philippines mostly do not require a bank account and can

be easily accessible using mobile phones. System such as Gcsh, make it easier

for Filipino to use digital payment platforms. E-payment systems have a strong

potential in a low bank country like Philippines. Previous studies on e-payment

mainly used the technology acceptance model (TAM) as a framework. TAM has

limited measures on consumer attitude. It is of basic knowledge that safety and

security are the top priorities of every consumer in making online transactions as

these are vulnerable to fraud, scams, and data privacy risks. When the data

contains sensitive financial information, it becomes even riskier. In this study,

Consumer Mobile Wallet Usage Analysis is created after having been evaluated

the proprietary survey results including key indicators such as the consumers’
identified demographics (such as age, gender, income level, etc.). Mobile

payments utilize mobile devices. Using your wireless devices, the researchers

benchmarked factors to consider in measuring the local residents’ acceptance of

using mobile payment.

In recent years, mobile payments have expanded (Nair,2016). This is a result of

Filipinos becoming increasingly wealthy, growing travel sector, and young Filipinos

are increasingly purchasing online (Nair, 2016). From 1% to 12%, the percentage

of digital payments has increased. (Massally et al., 2019) From 3% in 2013 to 10%

in 2018. However, Vicente (2018) The biggest barrier to cashless transactions in

the Philippines is absence of a safe and dependable payment infrastructure.

Vicente (2018) claims that about half of account holders who had internet access

weren't sure of e-payments owing to problems like hacking, personal information

breakdowns in security, and hazardous access.

Technical Protections is a series of specific technical mechanism are utilized to

ensure e-payments transactions safety on the internet and has now still been

developing. Transaction Procedures are steps users must take to perform service;

well defined e payment procedure should be prepared to fulfill consumers security

requirements. Transaction procedures include three proceduresL1) authenticating

each participant prior to the transaction;(2) providing consumers several separate

step forward the completion of the payment; and (3) sending acknowledgement

messages to each participant after the completion of the payment. Security

statements are statements made by enterprises providing e-payments services on

security. By informing and reassuring consumers regarding the security of e-

payments transactions, it will be possible to influence consumers perceptions of

security and perceived trust in e-payments. Personal Past Experience is a level of

familiarity with a certain amount of knowledge, it will lead to the faster adapting

Gcash or e-payment. Perceived Security is the consumers subjective evaluation

about the security of the online system, the gap of perceived security may erode

consumers’ willingness to use online services. In this study, perceived security is

understood as the degree of the security customers evaluate e payment

transaction and services.

The electronic payment system Is one of e-most commerce’s important features.

This payment method utilizes communications networks, cryptography, and IC

cards (Raja et. Al., 2008). A properly working electronic payment systems are

thought to have an efficient capital and interbank market and to reduce transaction

costs. The evolution of the electronic payment system follows that of technology.

Consequently, as this sector develops electronic money, digital wallets, and other

forms of online payment will all continue to advance.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has amended the prohibitions on using

electronic banking services with Circular No. 1033. As well as other electronic

activities. These updates largely address developments in financial technology and

electronic payments offerings (EPFS). E-banking and other fintech solutions are

needed by more banks and companies to improve the changes brought on by the

epidemic in how they distribute their goods and services.

The current e-banking and operations rules show how the BSP hopes to facilitate

transactions between users and providers easily. In order to facilitate the provision

of these services, the BSP seeks to establish a secure, effective, dependable,

affordable, and open-to-all national payment system. The BSP's 2017 Banking

Sector Outlook Survey indicates that the local banking industry's future

environment will be shaped by technology, with numerous institutions already

utilizing it. For more reach, consider using electronic solutions or fintech.

The FinTech Alliance was also introduced by the BSP, recognizing the function of

fintech in the digital revolution.

In November 2017, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) launched the Philippine

EFT System and Operations Network (PESONet) which was described by the BSP

as a batch electronic fund transfer (EFT) credit payment scheme, which can be

considered an electronic alternative to the paper-based check system. The

following year, they introduced InstaPay to the public and described it as an

electronic fund transfer (EFT) service that allows customers to transfer PHP funds

almost instantly between accounts of participating BSP-supervised banks and non-

bank e-money issuers in the Philippines. As the general public views these

changes positively, it greatly boosts the digital payments scheme in the

Philippines. As the majority of the Filipinos are adapting to e-money transactions,

in October of this year, Republic act No. 11127 or also known as the National

Payment Systems Act, was established to promote a safe and reliable online

payment systems that will contribute to the sustainable economic growth of the
country giving BSP the jurisdiction to regulate all service providers and system

operators involved in these transactions

It Is common knowledge that every consumer places the highest priority on safety

and security when conducting online transactions as these are susceptible to data

privacy risks, fraud, and con artists. When the data includes private financial data,

it increases the risk (Raja et. Al., 2008). Businesses in the expanding e-commerce

sector must take into account the security and authentication stability of their

various electronic payment systems practices in order to be sustainable (Aigbe

and Akpojaro, 2014). Gaining more consumer trust requires being able to address

the analytical and practical issues that have arisen and may arise in the electronic

payment system. A few of the obstacles that require long-term solutions include

laws and regulations (which protect buyers and sellers), the technological prowess

of e-payment service providers, economic cooperation, and security issues like

verification and identification problems. (Vickery and Panov,2006)

The idea of a cashless transaction system gained popularity in the nineteenth

century because to Edward Bellamy's public publications. According to him, paper

transactions would gradually be replaced by a credit card-based system.2000

(Bellamy). Mobile wallets, near field communication (NFC), online payment

services, and other innovations are continuously redefining how consumers trade,

with the majority of payment alternatives being "Tap-and-Go." (Ahmed 2016) As

businesses with the support of services like Apple Pay, Google Wallet, Paymaya,

Gcash, and others, mobile transactions will increase in volume in the future.

(NASDAQ 2017)
Mobile payment was defined by Amoroso & Watanabe (2011) as any type of

payment that uses a mobile device a mobile phone or any other type of device

capable of mobile communication connection networks, is used to launch,

approve, and verify a business transaction. Also known as "mobile money," "m-

payment," and "mobile money transfer" "mobile wallet". ( Alampay & Bala 2010).

LEGAL BASIS

Republic Act No. 10173, also known as the “Data Privacy Act of 2012”. The

processing of personal data shall be allowed subject to adherence to the principles

of transparency, legitimate purpose, and proportionality.

The Electronic Commerce Act of 2000, or RA No. 8792, establishes regulations to

protect consumers who conduct online transactions, particularly those involving

the purchase of goods and services.

Circular No. 944, Series of 2017 Guidelines for virtual currency Exchanges, issued

by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, covers exchanges in the Philippines that offer

services or engage in activities that facilitate the conversion or exchange of fiat

currency to VC or vice versa.

SYNTHESIS
These theories will direct researchers as they examine the data they have

obtained. This will assist the researchers in better comprehending how consumers

view or perceive utilizing Gcash for transactions, withdrawals, and money storage.

To be able to determine what elements significantly influence how consumers

utilize Gcash.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The major goal of this study is to enable us to understand how consumers

perceive the adaptation of online transactions and payments, particularly G-cash

payments. Although many people now use G-cash to pay their bills and other

expenses, there are still many people who do not have G-cash and do not utilize

it as a payment option. Many people don’t trust online transactions for a variety of

reasons, including the prevalence of frauds and con artists online, and they would

rather pay in cash. This study sought to answer the following questions:

1. What are the benefits of using Gcash as payment method?

2. What factors influence consumers in trusting Gcash?

3. What does the consumers prefer more paying through cash or cashless

payment?
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

To consumers. This study will help them to know what Gcash brings as one of

the payment methods in our time. This will help them to know if Gcash will greatly

help or not.

To business owners. This study will help them to grow their business more

especially if they know that many consumers already adapt Gcash as a payment

method. So, this study will help them to decide whether to accept Gcash as a

payment method.

To future researchers. This study can be a guide to future researchers if their

topic is connected to the consumer's perspective on the use of E-wallet.

To all readers. This is to make them understand what are the things that will

happen if we use Gcash especially and in our generation today, the use of Gcash

is widespread mostly in purchasing online.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

This research focused on investigating the perceptions of consumers in

adapting Gcash payment within Tubigon.

The research respondents were composed of 15 consumers. The primary

data gathering method was through questionnaires. The purpose of the method

is to identify the perceptions of consumers in adapting Gcash payment.
