LESSON

Introduction

Being a modern-day kid, you must have used, seen, or read about computers
since they are an indispensably part of our ordinary presence. Be it school, banks,
shops, railroad stations, hospital or your own home, computers are present
everywhere making our work easier and faster. Since computers are very important,
we must know what they are and how they work.
Computers are programmable electronic devices designed to accept data,
perform prescribed mathematical and logical operations at high speed, and display
the results of these operations. You can use this to type documents, send email, play
games, and browse the Web. Historically computers were classified according to
processor types since development in processor and processing speeds were the
formative benchmarks. Earliest computers used vacuum tubes for processing, were
huge and broke down regularly. However, as vacuum tubes were replaced by
transistors and after that chips, their size decreased, and processing speeds
expanded manifold.
When most people hear the word computer, they consider a personal
computer like a desktop or laptop. However, computers are available in many shapes
and sizes, and that they perform many various functions in our daily lives. Once you
withdraw cash from an ATM, scan groceries at the shop, or use a calculator, you are
using a type of computer. All advanced computers and computing devices utilize chip
whose speeds and capacities are skyrocketing day by day. The formative benchmark
for computers is presently their size. Computers are presently classified based on
their use or size.

Let us look at all these types of computers in detail.

1. Desktop computers

Desktop computers are personal computers

(PCs) designed for use by an individual at a
fixed location. Many use desktop computers at
work, home, and school. It is designed to
be placed on a desk, and they
are typically made up of a
few different parts including the computer
case, monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

2. Laptop computers

Despite its huge popularity, desktops gave

way to a more compact and portable
personal computer called laptop in 2000s.
Laptops are battery-powered computers
that are more portable than desktops,
allowing you to use them almost
anywhere. They also have chips for energy
efficiency so that they can conserve power
whenever possible and have a longer life.

3. Tablet computers

After laptop, computers

were further miniaturized
to create machines that
have processing control of a desktop but
are small enough to be held in one’s
palm. Tablets are handheld computers
that are undoubtedly more convenient
that instead of a keyboard and mouse, it
utilizes a touch-sensitive screen for
typing and navigation. The iPad is an
example of a tablet. Keyboard is also
displayed virtually whenever required
and used with touch strokes.

4. Servers

Servers are computers with high processing speeds

that provide one or more services to
other frameworks on the network. They may or may
not have screens connected to them. A group of
computers or digital devices associated together to
share resources is called a network. It serves
up data to other computers on a network.
For example, whenever you use the Web, you are
looking at something that is stored on a server.
Numerous businesses also utilize local file servers to
store and share records internally.

Other types of computers

Many of today's electronics are basically specialized computers, here are a

few common examples.

▪ Smartphones: A smartphone may be a cellular

phone with an integrated computer and other
features not initially related with an ordinary
telephone. Such features include an operating
system, web browsing, and the capacity to run
program applications which are presently
indispensably to everyday life.

▪ Wearables: Wearable technology could be

a common term for a group of devices
including fitness trackers and smartwatches that
are designed to be worn throughout the day.
Wearable tech is one of the fastest-advancing sectors
of the more extensive technology industry, presently
outpacing the improvement of smartphones. From
the basic fitness trackers and highly advanced sports
and smartwatches, to virtual and augmented reality
headsets, wearables are everywhere.

▪ Game consoles: A game console is a
specialized type of computer describes as a
gaming box or gadget that is basically designed
to play games that connects to a TV. The player
interacts with the game through a controller, a
hand-held gadget with buttons and
joysticks or cushions.

▪ Smart TV: In case you haven't bought a

TV in a few years, you could be astounded
to see that most TVs nowadays are
considered smart TVs, with Internet
connectivity and apps for streaming and
smart home functions. Many TVs now
include applications or apps that let you
access various types of online content.

Personal Computer and Macintosh (PC and Mac)

Personal computers (PC) come in two main styles: PC and Mac. Both are fully
functional, but they have a different look and feel, and many people prefer one or the
other.

Personal Computer (PC)

A personal computer (PC) generally refers to a computer that runs on the

windows operating system that is characterized as an IBM-compatible computer that
its engineering is based on the IBM chip. A number of different operating systems
are compatible with PCs; the most popular of which is Microsoft Windows and few
others are the UNIX variations, such as Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris.

Mac (Macintosh)

The Macintosh computer was introduced in 1984, and it was the first widely
sold personal computer with a graphical user interface, or GUI (pronounced gooey).
All Macs are made by one company (Apple), and they almost always use the Mac
OS X operating system. With software like Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion they
can be run, side by side.

Computer is used in almost every field even where it is most unexpected. That
is why this age is called as the era of IT. And now we cannot imagine a world without
computers. These days computers are the tools for not only engineers and scientists
but also, they are being used by millions of people around the world.
