EEE3100S 2023 Tutorial 8 Memo

This document contains the solutions to several questions regarding power transformers from a university tutorial. It includes: 1) Calculating secondary line voltages for transformers connected in star-delta and delta-star configurations. 2) Drawing schematics and determining values like current, voltage, and regulation for a 3-phase transformer bank. 3) Drawing equivalent circuits and calculating source voltage for transformers connected to 3-phase feeders. 4) Determining ratings and drawing connections/diagrams for a 3-phase transformer bank with a specified vector designation. 5) Drawing low-voltage connections and a vector diagram to achieve a specified configuration for a 3-phase transformer.

Question 1
(a) If three transformers, each with a turns ratio of 12:1, are connected star-delta and the primary
line voltage is 11 000 V, determine the value of the secondary line voltage.
(b) If the same transformers in (a) are reconnected delta-star with the same primary voltage,
determine the value of the secondary line voltage.
Solution
(a) Connected as Star-Delta

Line voltage on the MV side (Star) = 11 kV; Phase voltage on MV side = 11000 / √3 V=
6350.85 V
Turns ratio = 12: 1, therefore on the delta side:
Phase voltage = 6350.85/12 = 529.24 V = Line voltage
(b) Connected as Delta-Star
Line voltage on the MV side (Delta) = 11 kV = Phase voltage Turns
ratio = 12: 1, therefore on the star side:

Phase voltage = 11 000 /12 = 916.67 V; Line voltage 916.67 x √3 = 1 587.71 V

Question 2

Three 1φ, 10 kVA, 460 / 120 V, 60 Hz transformers are connected to form a 3φ, 460 / 208 V
transformer bank. The equivalent impedance of each transformer referred to the high-voltage side
is 1.0+j2.0 Ω. The transformer delivers 20 kW at 0.8 power factor (leading).
(a) Draw a schematic diagram showing the transformer connection.
(b) Determine the transformer winding current.
(c) Determine the primary voltage.
(d) Determine the voltage regulation.
Solution

Question 3
Three 1φ, 100 kVA, 2300/460 V, 60 Hz transformers are connected to form a 3φ, 2300/460 V
transformer bank. The equivalent impedance of each transformer referred to its low-voltage
side is 0.045+j0.16 Ω. The transformer is connected to a 3φ source through 3φ feeders, the
impedance of each feeder being 0.5+j1.5 Ω. The transformer delivers full load at 460 V and
0.85 power factor lagging.
