I. PROJECT SUMMARY
A. Statement of Need:
Bamboo is a valuable material which is being used to substitute wood. Bamboo
may replace wood in many industrial applications and thereby contribute to alleviating
deforestation and in turn encourage the restoration of tropical forest. Bamboo is a major
construction material particularly in rural areas. It can be used for almost all parts of the
house, including posts, roofs, walls, floors, beams and even fences. Local communities
have also been utilizing bamboo to produce mats, baskets, tools and furnitures. Indeed
bamboo has tremendous potential for socio-economic and environment development and
international trade.
Montealegre, Tuburan Cebu is one of the mountain barangays of the
Municipality of Tuburan. It is highly enriched with various culture and green values. Its
topographic location makes it wealthy in natural resources and one of them is the
abundance bamboo tree. Bamboos are of notable cultural and economic significance in
the in Montealegre, being used as building materials, as a food source, and as a versatile
raw product. Yet, the absence of structured initiatives has hindered the exploration of the
residents to explore other artistic potential which can increase the bamboos market value.
Consequently, there's an evident gap in the community's understanding of sustainable
practices and creative techniques for Bamboo craftmanship.
B. Relevance of Need :
The utilization rate of bamboo has remained low although most existing
bamboo species are fast growing. Despite the potential of bamboo for socio-economic
development, bamboo is currently not being utilized optimally as a community-based
commodity. The relevance of addressing this need roots from the strong desire to harness
and develop the Montealegrahanon, most specifically the women’s skills and potentials
with regards to Bamboo craft. By guiding the community in how to be artistic using the
abundance of nature that they have, thay can create a sustainable livelihood that will
create a big difference in their financial status.
