Materials for Installing
Formworks Components
Before you start answering the SLeM, I want you to set aside other tasks that will
disturb you while enjoying the lessons. Read the simple instructions below to
successfully enjoy the objectives of this kit. Have fun!
1. Follow carefully all the contents and instructions indicated in every page of
this SLeM.
2. Write on your notebook or any writing pad the concepts about the lessons.
Writing enhances learning that is important to develop and keep in mind.
3. Perform all the provided activities in the SLeM.
4. Let your facilitator/guardian assess your answers.
5. Analyze conceptually the posttest and apply what you have learned
1. Expectations - These are what you will be able to know completing the
lessons in the SLeM.
2. Pre-test - This will measure your prior knowledge and the concepts to be
mastered throughout the lesson.
3. Looking Back - This section will measure what learnings and skills that you
understand from the previous lesson.
4. Brief Introduction- This section will give you an overview of the lesson.
5. Activities- These are activities designed to develop critical thinking and other
competencies. This can be done with or without a partner depending on the
nature of the activity
6. Remember - This section summarizes the concepts and applications of the
lessons.
7. Checking your Understanding – It will verify how you learned from the lesson.
8. Posttest - This will measure how much you have learned from the entire
SLeM.
A. Expectation
The students are expected to:
1. identify the materials for installing formwork;
2. explain the different materials in installing formwork;
3. organize the materials used in installing formwork; and
4. estimate the cost of project material in installing formwork.
B. Pretest
Directions: Read and understand the statements/questions below. Write the letter
of the correct answer on a separate paper.
1. It refers to a piece of wood or stock.
A. log B. lumber C. plywood D. timber
2. It is a material with different sizes of nails ranging from 1”-4” (25mm-100mm) in
length.
A. assorted CWN B. brad nail C. finishing nail D. masonry nail
3. It is a material manufactured from thin layers of wood and used for covering in
fabricating formworks.
A. lumber B. plywood C. timber D. wood
C. Looking Back
MULTIPLE CHOICE:
Directions: Read the statement carefully. Choose the letter of the correct answer.
Write the letter of the correct answer on a separate answer sheet.
D. Brief Introduction
⮚ Materials
● Lumber is a type of wood that has been processed and mainly used for
structural purposes.
• Assorted CWN refers to the different sizes of nails ranging from 1”-4”
(25mm-100mm) in length. Common wire nails (CWN) are the most
commonly used.
● Marine plywood is manufactured from durable face and core veneers, with
few defects so it performs longer in both humid and wet conditions and
resists delaminating and fungal attack. Its construction is such that it can
be used in environments where it is exposed to moisture for long periods.
● Phenolic Boards with resin that has high temperature stability which can
be used in formworks
E. Activities
Describe what needs to be done when the materials are delivered. Consider
handling, location and storage.
Activity 2 Benefits of a plan and working drawing
Directions: Discuss the benefits of planning on what materials, tools and equipment
you will need before you start a task or project? What might happen if you try to figure
out what you need as you go along? Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.
F. Remember
Properties of Formwork Material
• Material should be cheap and re-usable
• It should be practically waterproof, so that it should not absorb water from
concrete
• Swelling and shrinkage should be minimum
• Strong enough to withstand all external loads
• Deflection should be minimum,
• Surface should be smooth, and afford easy striping
• Light in weight, so that easy to transfer,
• Joints should be stiff, so that lateral deformation and leak is minimum
• Lumber used for formwork that is finished on all sides is considered as Surfaced-
4-Sides (S4S) lumber
Plywood
• Plywood is used extensively for formwork for concrete
• Used for sheathing, decking, and form linings
• Gives smooth surface finish to the concrete
• Easy handling during construction
• Most common material used for formwork
• Available in varied thickness and lengths
• Plywood may be manufactured with interior glue or exterior glue
