5. Analyze conceptually the posttest and apply what you have learned

Parts of the SLeM

1. Expectations - These are what you will be able to know completing the
lessons in the SLeM.
2. Pre-test - This will measure your prior knowledge and the concepts to be
mastered throughout the lesson.
3. Looking Back - This section will measure what learnings and skills that you
understand from the previous lesson.
4. Brief Introduction- This section will give you an overview of the lesson.

D. Brief Introduction

Materials for Installing Formwork Components/Form Panels

Installing formwork components and form panels is one of the most

functional in rough carpentry works. Materials should be appropriately checked,
selected, and prepared per job requirements. Scaffold installation is also important
in this task. In addition, application on their proper care and maintenance will give
you the following advantages: efficiency of the work, quality speed and
accomplishment and accuracy.

⮚ Materials

● Plan and Working drawing representation of the particular formwork and

form panels to be built with all the required size and details drawn to scale

● Lumber is a type of wood that has been processed and mainly used for

structural purposes.
• Assorted CWN refers to the different sizes of nails ranging from 1”-4”
(25mm-100mm) in length. Common wire nails (CWN) are the most
commonly used.

● Plywood a type of strong thin wooden board consisting of two or more

layers glued and pressed together with the direction of the grain alternating,
and usually sold in sheets of four by eight feet It is made in thicknesses of
1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, and 3/4 inch, and in widths up to 48 inches. The 8-foot
lengths are most commonly used. The 6/8- and 3/4-inch thicknesses are
most economical.

● ORDINARY PLYWOOD is a sheet material manufactured from thin layers

or “plies” of wood veneer that are glued together with adjacent layers having
their wood grain rotated up to 90 degrees to one another. It is an engineered
wood from the family of manufactured boards which includes MDF,
Chipboard and Blackboard.

● Marine plywood is manufactured from durable face and core veneers, with
few defects so it performs longer in both humid and wet conditions and
resists delaminating and fungal attack. Its construction is such that it can
be used in environments where it is exposed to moisture for long periods.

● Phenolic Boards with resin that has high temperature stability which can
be used in formworks
E. Activities

Materials for Installing Formwork Components/Form Panels

Activity 1 Organizing Materials

Directions: Assemble form panel and stiffener given the working plan above. Use
the information provided to answer the following questions. Write the answer on
a separate sheet of paper.

List the materials required.

Quantity

List three suppliers of these materials in your area.

Describe what needs to be done when the materials are delivered. Consider
handling, location and storage.
Activity 2 Benefits of a plan and working drawing
Directions: Discuss the benefits of planning on what materials, tools and equipment
you will need before you start a task or project? What might happen if you try to figure
out what you need as you go along? Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

F. Remember
Properties of Formwork Material
• Material should be cheap and re-usable
• It should be practically waterproof, so that it should not absorb water from
concrete
• Swelling and shrinkage should be minimum
• Strong enough to withstand all external loads
• Deflection should be minimum,
• Surface should be smooth, and afford easy striping
• Light in weight, so that easy to transfer,
• Joints should be stiff, so that lateral deformation and leak is minimum
• Lumber used for formwork that is finished on all sides is considered as Surfaced-
4-Sides (S4S) lumber
Plywood
• Plywood is used extensively for formwork for concrete
• Used for sheathing, decking, and form linings
• Gives smooth surface finish to the concrete
• Easy handling during construction
• Most common material used for formwork
• Available in varied thickness and lengths
• Plywood may be manufactured with interior glue or exterior glue

G. Checking Your Understanding

Activity 3
Directions: Convert the dimensions of the given measurement from meter to
inches. Write the letter of the correct answer on a separate paper.

1. height of the form

2. width of the form
3. distance between each stiffener.
4. the proposed perimeter of the column
H. Post Test
Directions: Read and understand the statements/questions below. Write the letter
of the correct answer on a separate paper.
1. It refers to a piece of wood or stock.
A. log B. lumber C. plywood D. timber
2. It is a material with different sizes of nails ranging from 1”-4” (25mm-100mm) in
length.
A. assorted CWN B. brad nail C. finishing nail D. masonry nail
3. It is a material manufactured from thin layers of wood and used for covering in
fabricating formworks.
A. lumber B. plywood C. timber D. wood

4. A drawing representation of the particular formwork and form panels to be built

with all the required size and details drawn to scale.
A. isometric B. oblique C. rear view D. work plan drawing

5. What is the most appropriate size of plywood in fabricating formworks?

A. ¼” B. ½” C. ¾ ” D. 1 ”
