Lab Report: Installation of

Linux Operating System

Abstract
This lab experiment focused on the installation of the Ubuntu Linux operating system. The objective was
to gain a practical understanding of the installation process, including disk partitioning, package selection,
and user setup. The significance of this experiment lies in acquiring essential skills for deploying and
managing Linux-based systems.

Introduction
The Linux operating system is widely used for its stability, security, and flexibility. Ubuntu, a popular
Linux distribution, was chosen for this experiment due to its user-friendly interface and extensive
community support. The ability to install Linux is fundamental for any IT professional or enthusiast, as it
forms the basis for further system administration and software development.

Materials and Methods

Materials
 A laptop computer with the following specifications:
 Processor: Intel Core i7
 RAM: 8GB
 Storage: 256GB SSD
 Ubuntu 20.04 LTS installation USB drive

Methods
1. Pre-installation Preparations:
 Backed up all important data to an external drive.
 Checked hardware compatibility with Ubuntu's system requirements.

2. Creating Installation Media:

 Downloaded the Ubuntu 20.04 LTS ISO file from the official website.
 Created a bootable USB drive using the Rufus utility on a Windows computer.
3. Booting from the Installation Media:
 Inserted the Ubuntu installation USB drive into the laptop.
 Restarted the laptop and entered the BIOS settings to set the boot order to USB.

4. Installation Process:
 Chose the "Install Ubuntu" option from the boot menu.
 Followed the on-screen instructions to select language, keyboard layout, and time zone.
 Opted for the "Erase disk and install Ubuntu" option for disk partitioning.
 Created a user account and set the hostname.
 Configured network settings.
 Installed additional software packages, including OpenSSH server.

Results
The Ubuntu Linux operating system was successfully installed on the laptop. The installation process
took approximately 20 minutes. The operating system utilized 10GB of disk space, leaving ample room
for additional applications and data.
During the installation, no significant issues were encountered. The hardware was fully compatible with
Ubuntu, and the user-friendly installer guided through the process smoothly.

Discussion
The installation of Ubuntu Linux was straightforward and user-friendly. It demonstrated the ease of
installing a Linux operating system, especially with distributions like Ubuntu. The benefits of using
Ubuntu include its extensive software repositories, community support, and regular updates.
Comparatively, the Linux installation process is more hands-on and transparent than some proprietary
operating systems, providing users with a greater level of control over their system configuration.

Advantages of Ubuntu Linux Compared to Windows 10:

1. Cost: Ubuntu Linux is open-source and free to use, which makes it a cost-effective choice for
individuals and organizations. In contrast, Windows 10 requires purchasing a license, which can
be a significant expense.
2. Security: Linux, including Ubuntu, is known for its robust security features. It has a lower
susceptibility to viruses and malware compared to Windows. Additionally, Linux users typically
receive prompt security updates, reducing the risk of vulnerabilities.
3. Customization and Open Source: Ubuntu allows users to customize the operating system to a
high degree. You can modify the desktop environment, install different software packages, and
tailor the system to your specific needs. Ubuntu's open-source nature also encourages
community-driven development and transparency.
4. Stability: Linux systems are known for their stability and reliability. They can run for extended
periods without needing to be rebooted, making them suitable for server environments and
critical tasks.
5. Resource Efficiency: Ubuntu can run efficiently on hardware with modest specifications. This is
especially beneficial for older computers or devices with limited resources. Windows 10, in
contrast, tends to require more system resources.
6. Package Management: Ubuntu's package management system (APT) allows for easy
installation, updating, and removal of software packages. It simplifies software management and
ensures that you can easily access a vast library of open-source applications.

Disadvantages of Ubuntu Linux Compared to Windows 10:

1. Software Compatibility: Windows has a larger market share, which means it's more likely to
have software and applications specifically designed for it. Some proprietary software and games
are not available for Linux, which might limit your choices.
2. Hardware Support: While Linux has improved its hardware support over the years, it may not
be as seamless as Windows when it comes to plug-and-play compatibility with certain hardware
components and peripherals. Hardware manufacturers often prioritize Windows drivers.
3. Learning Curve: For users accustomed to Windows, the transition to Linux, especially for
system administration and advanced tasks, can have a steep learning curve. Command-line usage
and system configuration may be unfamiliar and require time to master.
4. Gaming: While Linux gaming has improved, it still lags behind Windows in terms of the
availability of popular gaming titles. Gamers may encounter compatibility issues or have to rely
on workarounds to play some games on Linux.
5. Limited Commercial Software: Some professional software, such as Adobe Creative Suite or
Microsoft Office, is not available natively on Linux. Users who rely on specific commercial
software may face challenges finding suitable alternatives.
6. Support and Documentation: While Linux has a robust community and support system, it may
not be as straightforward to find immediate help for certain issues compared to Windows, where
extensive official and third-party support is available.

Conclusion
This lab experiment successfully demonstrated the process of installing the Ubuntu Linux operating
system. It highlighted the user-friendly nature of Ubuntu and the advantages of choosing Linux for
various computing needs. This practical experience is valuable for individuals interested in system
administration, development, or simply exploring the world of Linux.
Recommendations
 Students should explore other Linux distributions to understand the diversity of options available.
 Experiment with custom partitioning to gain a deeper understanding of disk management.
 Familiarize oneself with command-line installations for advanced configurations.
