Worksheet 6

This document contains a summary of a chemistry engineering session on heat transfer fundamentals. It includes 5 questions related to calculating heat transfer rates through walls, between surfaces, and from pipes based on given temperatures, materials, and heat transfer coefficients. The questions provide temperature measurements and material properties to calculate heat loss, heat transfer rates, surface temperatures, and thermal conductivity.

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

COURSE: ENCH2EF SESSION 8

SI LEADER: MOULINE PHUMUSA DATE: 08 SEP 2023
TOPIC: HEAT TRANSFER FUNDAMETALS

QUESTION 1
The wall of an industrial furnace is constructed from 0.15 m thick fireclay brick having a thermal
conductivity of 1.7 W/m.K. Measurements made during steady - state operation reveal temperatures of
1400 and 1150 K at the inner and outer surfaces, respectively. What is the rate of heat loss through a
wall that is 0.5 m by 1.2 m on a side?

QUESTION 2

The forced convective heat – transfer coefficient of flowing hot water at 393 K over a cold steel surface
at 283 K is 1000 W/m2. K. Determine the heat transfer rate per unit surface area (W/m2) from the water
to the steel surface.

QUESTION 3
An uninsulated steam pipe passes through a room in which the air and walls are at 25 ℃. The outside
diameter of the pipe is 70 mm, and its surface temperature and emissivity are 200℃ and 0.8,
respectively. What is the surface emissive power and irradiation? If the coefficient associated with free
convection heat transfer from the surface to the air is 15 W/m2. K, what is the rate of heat loss from the
surface per unit length of pipe?

QUESTION 4

A spherical space ball of 0.5 cm diameter dissipates heat at 10 W. If the ball has an emissivity of 0.91
and it does not receive any appreciable radiation from any other surface, what is its surface temperature?

QUESTION 5

In determining the thermal conductivity of an insulating material, the temperatures were measured on
both sides of a flat slab of 25 mm of the material and were 318.4 and 303.2 K. The heat flux was
measured as 35.1 W/m2. Calculate the thermal conductivity in W/m. K.
