3 - Load DC Series Gen

The document describes an experiment to determine the magnetization and load characteristics of a DC series generator. The experiment involves separately exciting the field to obtain the magnetization curve, then connecting the generator to a load and measuring voltage and current output at varying loads. Key findings are expected to include the shapes of the magnetization, external, and internal characteristics curves and identifying the critical field resistance.

Determination of the magnetization and Load
characteristics of a DC series generater.

Theory :-
The machine cannot produce any voltage when it is disconnected
from the load except that generated due to residual magnetism in the pole
pieces . consequently at no load voltage of a series generator is
approximately zero as against the shunt machine in which the voltage at
on –load. Both the armature and the series field carry the same load
current . So the voltage increases with the load current . Without the
effects of armature –reaction, the emf characteristics would be similar to
the magnetization curve. Armature reaction effect and the IL(Rf+Ra) drop
both reduce the terminal voltage . The net result is a generally rising
characteristic like that shown curve AC in fig.1. But if saturation is
approached the characteristics drops and in the extreme , becomes nearly
vertical. Neglecting the armature reaction effect, the output voltage.

V=E-IL(Ra+Rf)=IL RL.

V= open circuit voltage.

IL=load current.

Rf=series field resistance.

Ra=armatuer and interpole resistance.

RL=load resistance.

Internal characteristics (curve AE) is obtained by adding ordinates of

(Ra+Rf)IL to external (curve AC) . The magnetization characteristic is
represented by (curve AB).

Procedure :-
A- The series field is separately excited from a d.c. source , (fig.2) and
the machine running up to normal speed, the magnetization curve
is obtained .
B- The machine is connected as in fig(3) and run up to normal speed
and no-load voltage is observed . the speed is maintained constant .
the switch (S) is closed and load resistance RL is gradually reduced
until the machine builds up . Increase IL up to about 20% over load.
When the armature resistance and the field resistance are still warm
the armature and field resistance are measured, using a low voltage
d.c. supply by ammeter and voltmeter method.

Conclusion :-
A) Draw the magnetization curve or open – circuit characteristics and
explained the shape.

B) 1-Draw the external and internal characteristics and find out the
critical voltage the resistance.

2-Discuss the shape of the load characteristic and compare it with

The other types of the D.C machines.

C) what is the critical field resistance for this generator .
