Potato chips were invented in 1853 by George Crum, a Native American/African American chef in Saratoga Springs, New York. When a customer complained their French fries were too thick, Crum made thinner batches in hopes of annoying the customer. However, the customer enjoyed Crum's very thin fried potatoes, which became known as potato chips. Potato chips did not gain widespread popularity until the 1920s when Mrs. Scudder began mass producing potato chips packaged in wax paper bags in 1926. Herman Lay also began producing Lay's potato chips, the first successfully marketed national brand.

POTATO CHIPS
The potato chip was invented in 1853 by George Crum. Crum was a
Native American/African American chef at the Moon Lake Lodge
resort in Saratoga Springs, New York, USA. French fries were
popular at the restaurant and one day a customer complained that the
fries were too thick. Although Crum made a thinner batch, the
customer was still unsatisfied. Crum finally made fries that were too
thin to eat with a fork, hoping to annoy the customer. The customer,
surprisingly, was happy - and potato chips were invented!
However, potato chips did not gain wide-spread popularity until the 1920s, when a Mrs. Scudder
began mass producing the first potato chips packaged in wax paper bags in 1926 and Herman Lay
began producing Lay's potato chips, the first successfully marketed national brand.
