Chapter 6: Ansys Fluids Products
6.1. Fluent
The following sections list issues that have been resolved in Fluent 2022 R1:
6.1.1. Solution Mode
6.1.2. Client Applications

6.1.1. Solution Mode

The following is a list of issues that have been resolved in the solution mode of Fluent 2022 R1.

Discrete Phase Model

• For the Combusting particle type, the particle diameter and the particle density are now computed
more accurately during the devolatilization law under the following conditions (511208):

– The Wet Combustion option is enabled for the injection (in the Set Injection Properties dialog
box)

– The multiple-surface-reactions combustion model with the Composition Dependent Density

option is selected for the combusting-particle material (in the Create/Edit Materials dialog box).

Licensing

• (Discovery to Fluent direct transfer) License sharing is supported and no longer requires a work-
around. (435621)

Gap Model

• In the gap model, the solution interpolation algorithm now interpolates the solution into the gap
regions correctly. (462102)

Graphics Display

• Graphics objects (particularly very small elements such as tiny vectors) no longer partially or com-
pletely disappear during graphics window mouse interactions (such as zooming or panning).
(427755)

Solver-Meshing

• For parallel simulations that have both a one-to-one mesh interface and a wall zone with the Shell
Conduction option enabled, it is no longer necessary to enter the following text command prior
to creating the mesh interface in order to avoid an abnormal termination when you attempt to

of ANSYS, Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates. 11
Ansys Fluids Products

write a case file after initialization: define/mesh-interfaces/enable-visualization-

of-interfaces? no. (454054)

Species Model

• When running on Windows, Fluent no longer terminates abnormally or produces an error for a
species model case when you attempt to read it more than once in the same Fluent session, if the
case uses a compiled user-defined function (UDF) and calls the ISAT library (such as when the ISAT
integration method is selected in the Integration Parameters dialog box) and/or the KINetics library
(such as when the CHEMKIN-CFD Solver is selected for the Chemistry Solver in the Species
Model dialog box). This fix is the result of upgrading to the latest Intel Math Kernel Library. (345868
/ 304497)

Turbulence

• Freezing the weighting coefficients of the central differencing and upwind components of the BCD
scheme (described in section Bounded Central Differencing Scheme in the Fluent Theory Guide) is
now available in the Embedded LES framework.(463633)

6.1.2. Client Applications

The following is a list of issues that have been resolved in the client applications of Fluent 2022 R1.

Fluent Icing

• Path and Case File Names With Spaces

Path with spaces either in the project path or in the case file name are now supported with the
current post-processing tools (CFD-Post, EnSight) (372223)

• Node Reordering

In some cases, Fluent might reorder the nodes inside its case file. For instance, this can happen
when a case file, that contains mapped interfaces, is loaded using a different set of CPUs. Fluent
Icing will now detect this change in node order and indicate to the user that nodes have been re-
ordered and that prior icing solutions are no longer compatible with the case file. If post-processing
of these solutions is needed, it is suggested to rerun these icing solutions using the new re-ordered
case file or to revert to the original number of CPUs. (372217)

• Interruption of EID Simulations

The EID solver step cannot be interrupted. The interrupt command/button will be effective only at
the end of the EID computation. (372220)

• Quick-View Object Deletion

Selecting a post-processing option from the Quick-view ribbon automatically creates a Quick-view
entry in the Outline View. It is now possible to delete this Quick-view entry from the Outline
View without compromising future Quick-view usage from the ribbon. (372221)

Fluent Aero

• Boundary Properties Panel

Release 2022 R1 - © ANSYS, Inc. All rights reserved. - Contains proprietary and confidential information
12 of ANSYS, Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates.
CFD-Post

When you modified a boundary zone, the user interface had some issues in updating the Properties
panel associated with that boundary zone. (533782)

– Immediate update of all the zone settings when changing the zone type.

– Warning messages no longer appear when changing an unsupported zone type to a supported
zone type.

• Calculation User Interface Issues

The first time you calculate a new simulation, a message will be printed to the console stating that
a boundary type used in previous results has changed and that the run.settings file will be
deleted, even though no previous results exist. This message no longer appears. (533783)

• The user interface no longer freezes during the calculation of the first Design Point. (533776)

• The following message, Warning: Pressure-far-field boundary conditions may

only be used with ideal gas law, would appear when you first create a new aero
workflow. This warning could be ignored as Fluent Aero would automatically enable the ideal gas
law when Calculate was pressed. (538125)

• It might be possible to edit columns in the Input:Design Points Table that are protected and should
not be modified by you (such as the DP column) by using some combination of mouse click and
mouse drag operations. If you mistakenly changed this value, use the Reload DP Table command
to refresh the values to their intended state. (538139)

6.2. CFX
See the Ansys 2022 R1 Release Notes for descriptions of product enhancements.

6.3. TurboSystem and TurboGrid

• In order to import an NDF file into BladeGen from the Workbench project schematic, or use the Load
NDF type of data transfer from BladeGen to BladeEditor, it is no longer necessary to set the environ-
ment variable ANSYS_SYSDIR to winx64 before starting Workbench. (459062)

See the Ansys 2022 R1 Release Notes for descriptions of product enhancements.

6.4. BladeModeler

6.6. Polyflow
See the Ansys 2022 R1 Release Notes for descriptions of product enhancements.

6.7. Forte

Simulation Interface
• Added validation check for use of contiguity check with split regions. [484213]

Engineering Models and Computation

• Fixed a periodic-boundary-condition handling error when small geometric features are close to the
periodic boundary.[461757]

• For built-in FSI, fixed the unexpected oscillating behavior of a bending beam. [468174]

• Improved the pressure-force integration on built-in FSI surfaces. [465846]

• Fixed an issue that caused restart simulations to crash for certain spray simulations. [456791]

• Fix a bug in spray wall impingement model that can cause underprediction of splashed mass and
overprediction of wall film mass. [478513]

• Removed erroneous validation check that was reporting errors for certain valid mesh configurations.
[478357]

• Automatically disable chemistry-related options when chemistry solver is set to Always Off. [533790]

See the Ansys 2022 R1 Release Notes for descriptions of product enhancements.

6.8. Chemkin-Pro

Chemkin-Pro
• Fixed the issue that appeared when opening a new project and setting of toggle choices, where the
user choice was not honored. The affected settings included: (1) turning on/off bulk equations for all
0-D and PFR models, (2) selecting fixed temperature or energy equation for CVD reactors, (3) selecting
correction velocity or trace-species approximation for CVD reactors, and (4) selecting fixed composition
or inlet flux balance for all Flame and CVD reactors. This issue only affected newly created projects
in 2021 R2. [470043]

• Fixed defect that prevented reading of dimensionless heat transfer inputs while loading Chemkin-
Pro DI model project files created in release 2019 R2 or earlier. The defect previously occurred only
when using the dimensionless heat transfer option. [528202]

• Corrected the fuel-vaporization rate calculation in the Chemkin-Pro Direct-Injection Diesel engine
model. The correction will cause vaporization rates to be higher than in previous releases; recalibration
can be achieved using the vaporization-rate multiplier in the project settings. [493022]

Release 2022 R1 - © ANSYS, Inc. All rights reserved. - Contains proprietary and confidential information
14 of ANSYS, Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates.
FENSAP-ICE

• Corrected the reporting of forward rate constants within the Mechanism Inspector utility or using
the Mechanism Analyzer for Chebychev pressure-dependent reactions. [517474]

• Fixed an issue that caused the export of solution data to Excel to fail. [498118]

• Corrected the initialization of species fractions in 0-D reactors, which were incorrect when multiple
materials were used in the chemistry set and an initialization connection was used in the project
Diagram to initialize a downstream reactor from an upstream one. [501954]

Reaction Workbench
• Corrected selection behavior for Outputs in the Analyze Results panel when multiple PSR clusters are
included in the Chemkin-Pro project diagram. [493639]

• Corrected the handling of species defined with large numbers of atoms (>1 million), when used in
Mechanism Reduction. [463182]

See the Ansys 2022 R1 Release Notes for descriptions of product enhancements.

6.9. FENSAP-ICE
See the Ansys 2022 R1 Release Notes for descriptions of product enhancements.

The following issues have been resolved in Ansys FENSAP-ICE 2022 R1:

• FENSAP-TURBO Flow/Axis Orientation When Using Full-Wheel Domains

If FENSAP-TURBO is used with a full-wheel domain connected to a rotational periodic domain,

the flow direction should be in the positive axis of rotation to avoid divergence due to interfacing
errors. (454917)

• Boundary Type Modifications Not Supported in CHT With Fluent and CFX

In a Fluent or CFX import panel of FENSAP-ICE, if the Boundary Condition type is changed, this
modification will not be carried over to the CHT workflow simulation. Inside CHT, calculations
will stop with a message indicating that the boundary condition types or node counts are incom-
patible. To prevent this from occurring inside CHT, modify boundary condition types directly
inside Fluent and CFX before importing your solutions into FENSAP-ICE. (457643)

• App-D ICC error for Crystal-only runs

If the Ice Crystal Content in the DROP3D conditions panel does not update after configuring it
with Appendix-D, reopen and close the Appendix-D configuration. This will override the ICC with
the correct value. If the issue persists, enter the correct value manually. (460991)

• Viewmerical Crash in Batch Mode if Exit Command Omitted

Viewmerical post processor would crash if the command EXIT was not included at the end of
the batch execution line. (485474)

• Computing Artificial Melting of Crystals at the Shadow Zone Boundaries

Release 2022 R1 - © ANSYS, Inc. All rights reserved. - Contains proprietary and confidential information
of ANSYS, Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates. 15
Ansys Fluids Products

The particle thermal energy equation of DROP3D has been known to compute artificial melting
of crystals at the shadow zone boundaries, which is problematic in engine icing simulations as
these crystal lead to sticking on cold surfaces where ice is not observed in experiments. The issue
was due to an imbalance of stabilization terms between the continuity and energy equations.
It is resolved by correcting the conservative form implementation of the particle thermal energy
equation for finite elements. (543132)

• Support for Multishot Using Automatic Remeshing With Roughness and Screens

When running a multishot simulation with automatic remeshing and screen model enabled, the
built-in custom remeshing script was not copying the wire diameter to the roughness file that
was used by FENSAP for the next shot. To correct this, you had to go to the multishot run directory
and change the roughness interpolation section in the custom_remeshing.sh file to the
following:
• if test -f roughness.dat.ice.$shot1
• then
• "$NTI_PATH/rough2rough" $GP roughness.dat.ice.$shot1
• $GM roughness.dat.map.wall -bc=2 -field=20
• "$NTI_PATH/rough2rough" $GI roughness.dat.map.wall
• $GO roughness.dat.ice.$shot1.disp.wall -flat -bc=2 -field=20
• "$NTI_PATH/rough2rough"
• $GO roughness.dat.ice.$shot1.disp.screen -bc=6 -field=60
• "$NTI_PATH/mergebcs" roughness.dat.ice.$shot1.disp.wall
• roughness.dat.ice.$shot1.disp.screen roughness.dat.ice.$shot1.disp
• rm -f roughness.dat.map.wall roughness.dat.ice.$shot1.disp.wall
• roughness.dat.ice.$shot1.disp.screen
fi

The scenario is now supported. (215362)

6.10. EnSight
See the Ansys 2022 R1 Release Notes for descriptions of product enhancements.

The following issues have been resolved in EnSight 2022 R1

• Restoring of context files (and session files) no longer causes the wrong partname to be assigned to
the parts. This caused problems with subsequent grouping operations as well (sometimes seen as
wrong parts in the groups). Some occurrences of this issue had to be resolved by setting the envir-
onment variable ENSIGHT_USE_OLD_CONTEXT_PART_BUILD and restoring the context/session
files again. (467163)

• Right-clicking a part(s) in a viewport to specify the location of the clip would sometimes create the
clip in an unintended location. Depending upon your particular view and clip direction, you would
not get the intended location when right-clicking on the part for the location of the clip. In the interim,
you could still get predictable clip locations when either right-clicking the part in the Part list (The
clip would be at MIDRANGE location), or using the Clip Tool dialog directly, from the top row icons.
(The clip location would be directly entered). (471435)

• When working with 2D Axisymmetric solutions containing Discrete Particle Model (DPM), the location
of the particles stored in the .dat.h5 and exported to the EnSight Case files would not be constrained
in the 2D domain, and would be shown outside of computational domain. (221797)

Release 2022 R1 - © ANSYS, Inc. All rights reserved. - Contains proprietary and confidential information
16 of ANSYS, Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates.
EnSight

• There had been a recent change in the convention used to denote the direction of the wall shear
force from Fluent. EnSight had not yet adjusted to this change in convention, and therefore showed
the vector direction for wall shear opposite to that reported by Fluent. You had to multiply the shear
force vector by -1 to align with the convention used by Fluent. (352286)

• On some Linux systems and in certain remote desktop configurations, the EnSight, EnVe, EnVision
and Nexus tools would not be able to find the desired typefaces for use in graphical user interfaces.
In these cases, the graphical user interface would come up, but user interface text would be displayed
in a monospaced or serifed typeface. The most common situation was when a server focused Linux
install (without a complete set of desktop packages) was used to host an application session over a
remote rendering solution like vncserver or DCV. There were a couple of ways to work around this
issue. First, one could install a set of desktop packages (for example, Gnome or KDE) on the system
which would usually fix the issue. Second, there was a command line flag -distfonts that could
be included on the EnSight (or other tool) command line. This flag caused the graphical user interface
tools to ignore the fonts installed in the operating system, using instead the base fonts included in
the EnSight package. A third option was to modify the system’s fontconfig configuration files to
provide an alias for the typeface ‘sans serif’, such as: <match target="pattern"> <test
qual="any" name="family"> <string>sans serif</string> </test> <edit
name="family" mode="assign" binding="same"> <string>Arial</string>
</edit> </match>. (316429)

• When using a remote desktop protocol (for example, RDP/VDI/DCV), in combination of sending 3D
scenes to a Nexus report, the Report Tab in EnSight was unable to display the 3D scene correctly.
This appeared to be further isolated to allocations which do not support GPU of WebGL rendering.
The report itself was correct, and the issue was isolated to viewing of the report only. You would
need to view that report on a system which supports GPU rendering and WebGL. (291848)

• When using the CFF Post file format (.cas.post/.dat.post), variable values would get exported
with a value of ‘0.0’, when in fact they were meant to be undefined. Unfortunately this would cause
confusion as to when certain variables are truly 0.0, or undefined as 0.0. If you would have seen values
of 0.0 in unexpected locations, you would have questioned whether these are truly 0.0, or undefined
as 0.0. This issue was caused during the export, and EnSight had no way to inform you of this incor-
rectly exported value. (346535)

• Due to limitation with the availability of DirectX through browsers on VDI systems, the Nexus Template
Editor would not launch on a browser VDI when there is no GPU acceleration available. (437349)

• When using Fluent to export CFF Post files (.cas.post/.dat.post), during transient runs where
the grid changes at a different frequency than the export of the variables, you would end up with M
number of .cas.post files and N number of .dat.post files (M<N). In this situation, if Fluent
had not also written out a project file (misplaced or not written), EnSight would not be able to know
which .cas.post file (which describes the geometry) matches up to which .dat.post files
(variable values). If you did not end up with a project file exported from Fluent, the one potential
workaround was to copy (or soft link) the intermediate skipped .cas.post files so that you had a
matching number of .cas.post and .dat.post files. (413380)

• For structured grid datasets, in SoS mode, there would be a crash of the EnSight server when an
elemental variable is activated. This appeared to be isolated to a particular type of dataset, and was
therefore not expected to be experienced in any frequency. The known workaround for this particular
dataset was to run in serial mode. (428080)

• For structured grid datasets, in SoS mode, when there is null part on the last server, an improper
display of that block structured grid would occur. The workaround was that this issue would not occur
in serial mode. (383344)

• In 2020 R1 & R2, we no longer exported queries over distance in a transient solution to multiple files.
EnSight would only writes the current timestep’s query out in this instance. We created a new file
format mechanism to handle these special types of queries (one that can also be read into EnSight).
Prior to this, a potential work around was to write a small python loop which walked through time
and exported out a new file for each timestep. (446619)

• The Quick Interaction Area (QIA) at the top right of EnSight was meant to change to a subset of icons
to allow quick modification of the attributes of an entity (Part, Viewport, Annotation, Query, etc). In
previous versions of EnSight, the decision logic to obtain a more correct QIA to show the user based
on right-click menus was not robust. In 2021 R2, as a result of fixing other part selection and refresh
issues, this QIA area was now exposing the underlying issues of robustness, and therefore was now
potentially not showing the correct QIA for the last operation made. In particular, when using the
right-click menu operations, for part selections, the Part QIA was not shown (typically Viewport or
Annotation QIA instead). Selection with the left mouse button combined with the QIA target icons
remained fairly robust, therefore part selection with left mouse button was the suggested temporary
workaround. (436054)

• For LS-Dyna results which contained multiple temperature values (via multiple layers) for each node
in the domain, the LS-Dyna reader was not handling this situation properly. This issue is resolved in
the new LSTC-LS-DYNA reader (LSTC-LS-DYNA Reader). Users who experience this problem using the
LS-Dyna reader are encouraged to use the new LSTC-LS-DYNA reader instead. (437857)

• When restoring context files (heavily leveraged by Workbench workflows), changing unit system
would cause different ranges for the variable color palette because the variable range did not change
with the unit system change. Previously, the variable range was allowed to auto-scale on restore
(which appeared to be implicitly compliant with the unit change). The change in unit system could
be triggered by utilizing Forte (cgs unit base). (435435)

• Right-clicking a part(s) in a viewport to specify the location of the clip would sometimes create the
clip in an unintended location. Depending upon your particular view and clip direction, you would
not get the intended location when right-clicking on the part for the location of the clip. In the interim,
you could still get predictable clip locations when either right-clicking the part in the Part list (The
clip would be at MIDRANGE location), or use the Clip Tool dialog directly, from the top row icons.
(The clip location could be directly entered). (471435)

• Restoring of context files (and session files) could cause the wrong part name to be assigned to the
parts. This could also cause problems with subsequent grouping operations as well (sometimes seen
as wrong parts in the groups). Some occurrences of this issue could be resolved by setting the envir-
onment variable ENSIGHT_USE_OLD_CONTEXT_PART_BUILD and restoring the context/session
files again. (467163)
