Conduction Along A Composite Bar

This document studies heat conduction along a composite bar made of different materials. It describes conducting experiments where heat is applied to one end of the bar and temperature is measured at various points along it. The overall heat transfer coefficient U is calculated using Fourier's law, and the thermal conductivity Ks of one material slab is determined. The calculated Ks values have less than 25% error compared to literature values, demonstrating the experiment can evaluate thermal properties of composite walls.

Conduction along a composite bar

Objective:

To study the conduction of heat along a composite bar and evaluate the
overall heat transfer coefficient.

Theory:

For study flow along the bar, the heat flow through successive slabs is the
same for reasons of continuity and hence from Fourier's law:

U is over all heat coefficients for the composite wall and 1/U is the over
all resistance to heat flow.
