COLLECTS AND READINGS

Collect: Almighty Father, whose will is to restore all things in your beloved Son, the king of all:
Govern the hearts and minds of those in authority, and bring the families of the nations, divided and
torn apart by the ravages of sin, to be subject to his just and gentle rule; who is alive and reigns with
you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

First Reading ~ Isaiah 10: 33 - 11: 9

Look, the Sovereign, the Lord of hosts, will lop the boughs with terrifying power; the tallest trees
will be cut down, and the lofty will be brought low. He will hack down the thickets of the forest with
an axe, and Lebanon with its majestic trees will fall. A shoot shall come out from the stock of
Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him, the spirit of
wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of
the Lord. His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or
decide by what his ears hear; but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity
for the meek of the earth; he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath
of his lips he shall kill the wicked. Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist, and faithfulness
the belt around his loins. The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid,
the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear
shall graze, their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing
child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder’s den.
They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of
the Lord as the waters cover the sea.

Psalm 93 (BCP p. 700)

The Lord is king, he is robed in majesty; ♦︎ the Lord is robed, he is girded with strength.
He has established the world; ♦︎ it shall never be moved;
your throne is established from of old; ♦︎ you are from everlasting.
The floods have lifted up, O Lord, the floods have lifted up their voice; ♦︎ the floods lift up their
roaring.
More majestic than the thunders of mighty waters,
more majestic than the waves of the sea, ♦︎ majestic on high is the Lord!
Your decrees are very sure; ♦︎ holiness befits your house,

Epistle Reading – Romans 8: 31-39

What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not
withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will he not with him also give us everything
else? Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? It
is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes
for us. Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or
famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, ‘For your sake we are being killed all day
long; we are accounted as sheep to be slaughtered.’ No, in all these things we are more than
conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels,
nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything
else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Gospel/New Testament Reading ~ St Matthew 5: 1-12
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to
him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is
the kingdom of heaven. ‘Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. ‘Blessed are the
meek, for they will inherit the earth. ‘Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled. ‘Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. ‘Blessed are the pure
in heart, for they will see God. ‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
‘Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
‘Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you
falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way
they persecuted the prophets who were before you.’

Post-Communion Prayer: God of peace, whose Son Jesus Christ proclaimed the kingdom and
restored the broken to wholeness of life: Look with compassion on the anguish of the world, and by
your healing power make whole both people and nations; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen

O Valiant Hearts
O valiant hearts who to your glory came
Through dust of conflict and through battle flame;
Tranquil you lie, your knightly virtue proved,
Your memory hallowed in the land you loved.

Proudly you gathered, rank on rank, to war Still stands His Cross from that dread hour to this,
As who had heard God’s message from afar; Like some bright star above the dark abyss;
All you had hoped for, all you had, you gave, Still, through the veil, the Victor’s pitying eyes
To save mankind—yourselves you scorned to save. Look down to bless our lesser Calvaries.
Splendid you passed, the great surrender made; These were His servants, in His steps they trod,
Into the light that nevermore shall fade; Following through death the martyred Son of God:
Deep your contentment in that blest abode, Victor, He rose; victorious too shall rise
Who wait the last clear trumpet call of God. They who have drunk His cup of sacrifice.
Long years ago, as earth lay dark and still, O risen Lord, O Shepherd of our dead,
Rose a loud cry upon a lonely hill, Whose cross has bought them and Whose staff has led,
While in the frailty of our human clay, In glorious hope their proud and sorrowing land
Christ, our Redeemer, passed the self same way. Commits her children to Thy gracious hand
Words taken from a poem by Sir John Stanhope Arkwright (1872–1954), published in The Supreme Sacrifice, and other
Poems in Time of War (1919). Set to music by the Rev. Dr. Charles Harris (1865-1936).
