Overview
Workday offers a large selection of Delivered reports in your tenant. If none of these reports meet your needs,
you can use the Workday Report Writer Tool to either modify an existing report or write your own.

In this section, we’ll briefly review the report categories, how to search for and identify reports in your tenant,
and offer a recommended decision path to follow as you evaluate your reporting needs.

Report Categories
Standard Reports
Custom Reports

The key difference between these report types is who owns or maintains them once created. Standard reports
are part of the Workday product, maintained by Workday. Report additions or modifications are automatically
reflected in your tenant. Custom reports augment or supplement the delivered Standard reports and are
maintained by customers once in their tenants, regardless of where they originated.

Standard Reports
Workday Standard Reports include 2 Xpresso Reports and Standard Reports. These reports are created and
maintained by Workday. If a Standard report is added or updated, the change is reflected in all customer tenants.
If you replace a Workday Standard Report with a Custom Report, you may choose to hide the Standard Report.

Workday Delivered Xpresso Reports

Developed and maintained in Workday’s developer language (Xpresso)

Used to create complex reports, plus certain regulatory/statutory and audit reports designed to meet
specific requirements
Cannot be copied or modified, but can be hidden

Workday Delivered Standard Reports

Developed and maintained using the Report Writer Tool
May be copied.
The copy becomes a Custom Report, which can then be edited by customer implementers and
report writers. This is often done to better align the report to customer requirements

Custom Reports

Custom Reports are created using the Report Writer Tool. They are considered tenanted reports and supplement
the Standard Reports. Their maintenance is the responsibility of the tenant owner, regardless of their source.
Custom may come from 3 distinct sources:

1. Copies of Standard Reports

When you copy a Standard Report, the copy becomes a Custom Report)
2. Custom Reports that originate from Workday Services or a Workday Services Partner
These are typically migrated into your tenant as part of your implementation tenant build or via the
Configuration Catalog accessible within your Customer Central tenant.
3. Reports created directly in your Workday environment

Workday Delivered Custom Reports

These are created by Workday’s Services organization to augment reports delivered by Workday. They are
sometimes referred to as reusable assets. Content is based on common reporting needs that Services teams have
created for existing customers.

Developed and maintained within the Report Writer Tool

Imported into customer tenants either during the initial tenant build or from WDSETUP using the
Configuration Catalog
May be copied and/or modified by customer implementers and report writers

Customer Created Custom Reports

Created and maintained by customer implementers and report writers

Tailored to customer-specific business requirements
Developed and maintained using the Report Writer Tool
May be copied and/or modified by customer implementers and report writers

Reports to Identify Reports Available in Your Tenant

Here are 3 ways to identify the reports in your tenant:

Xpresso and Standard Reports

Search for Workday Standard Reports

Filter by selecting appropriate Report Categories
Note: You can select more than one.
The Filter field is optional. However, with a combined total of over 4000 delivered Xpresso and Standard
Reports, we recommend limiting your search to target your results and reduce processing times.
Results include a report description, the type of report (Xpresso (not copyable) and Standard (copyable)),
if the report can be scheduled, and the domain the report is secured to.

Standard Report - Report Definition

Search for View Standard Report

Filter by selecting a single report to view
Results display the Report Definition for the Standard Report
Once you’ve reviewed the definition, you can copy, run or schedule the report by clicking Action >
Standard Report > and the appropriate action
All Custom Reports in Your Tenant

Includes Custom Reports that originated from Workday Services, copies of Standard Reports, and reports
created in your tenant
Search for All Custom Reports
Filter on any appropriate values or click okay to display all Custom Reports
The Filter field is optional. However, to view the Custom Reports in your tenant that are marked
Temporary, you must click the Is Temporary check box.
Results include the report name, description, and layout type, plus information related to the report’s
creation and run dates.
Report Development Decision Path
Follow the path of simplest to hardest. The simplest is running an existing report. whereas the hardest is
developing a report from scratch. Whenever you can, take advantage of existing reports.

Note: We recommend completing all report modification or report development in a non-production (Sandbox
or Implementation tenant) and only moving the report to your production environment once it’s been approved.
