Lecture 1 - Review of Differentiation Technique

This document provides an overview of differentiation techniques and rules. It begins with a review of the definition of the derivative and common notations used. It then covers the following differentiation rules: 1) The constant rule - the derivative of a constant is 0. 2) The single variable rule - the derivative of a single variable function is the derivative of that variable. 3) The power rule - the derivative of a variable to a power is that power times the variable to the power minus 1. 4) The constant multiple rule - the derivative of a constant times a function is the constant times the derivative of the function. 5) The sum and difference rules - the derivative of a sum or

The Derivative of a Function
f a  h  f a 
lim

is called the derivative of f at a.

f  a  h  f a

h 0 h
“The derivative of f with respect to x is …”

Known as differentiation from the first principles

1.1 The Derivative of a Function

 Before we look at some basic rules or differentiation of the

common functions , let examine some notation that you
might see for the derivative:

f ( x ) f y

dy d Dx y
f ( x)
dx dx
Cont. Notations

f  x “f prime x” or “the derivative of f with respect

to x”
y “y prime”
dy

dx respect to x”
df
“dee eff dee ecks” or “the derivative of f with
dx respect to x”
d
f  x  “dee dee ecks uv eff uv ecks” or “the derivative
dx
( d dx of f of x ) of f of x”
Differentiation of the common functions

 Derivatives are an essential part of calculus, but using the

differentiation from the first principles (using limit
definition) can be difficult and can take a long time to
evaluate. Luckily, we have a few rules that will make
finding the derivative much easier, known as the
differentiation of the common functions.
 The basic rules include: the constant rule, the single
variable rule,
1. The constant Rule

y b
y8 f (x)  0 s (t )   7

y  0 f ( x )  0 s ( t )  0  3

2.The Single Variable Rule

5.The Sum/Difference Rules
