Spectra Lab

1) Students performed an experiment to observe emission spectra of various elements by passing electricity through different gas-filled tubes and viewing them through a spectroscope. 2) Data was recorded on the observed color of each element to the naked eye and any spectral lines visible through the spectroscope. 3) Calculations were done to determine the wavelength, frequency, and energy of observed spectral lines.

Emission Spectra Lab

Procedure:
1. Set up the incandescent light source. Support the student spectroscope with the test tube
2. Draw the visible continuous spectrum that you see along with the scale readings in the
3. Prepare an observation table
4. Place one of the spectrum tubes into the high voltage energy source.
5. Record name of the element being observed, and carefully describe the colour in the tube.
6. Observe the Geissler tube through the spectroscope, and record exactly what you see.
7. Repeat steps 4, 5 and 6 for each spectrum tube
