An atom is the smallest unit of matter and consists of a nucleus containing protons and neutrons surrounded by electrons. Atoms of the same element have the same number of protons. Elements are made up of atoms and have unique chemical symbols to identify them, which are typically one or two letters like C for carbon or Ca for calcium. The first 20 elements of the periodic table are listed along with their symbols.

What are elements?

Element are made up of particles known as atoms
* different elements have different atoms
Ex:
-Carbon atoms make the carbon element

Elements and their symbols

• Elements have long names.

• so, symbols are used to identify them
Ex:
• Carbon → C
• magnesium → Mg

• these symbols can have one capital letter or two letters (first letter is capital &
second letter is simple)
Ex:
• copper →Cu

• The chemical symbol takes either the 1st letter or first +second/ third letter is
taken
ex:
1st letter → Carbon (C)
First + second letter → Calcium (Ca)
First + third letter → magnesium (Mg)

• some chemical symbols use makes from other languages (Latin/ German /Greek)

Ex:
• Natrium= Sodium → Na
• ferrous/ ferrum=iron → Fe
• Wolfram = tungsten → W
