Informative Speech

An informative speech aims to educate an audience on a topic they may not be familiar with. There are four main types: definition speeches explain the meaning of a topic; descriptive speeches create a vivid picture or description; explanatory speeches explain ideas, processes or events; and demonstrative speeches teach how to perform an action or complete a task. The goal is to present information objectively and allow the audience to learn rather than sway their views. Details, descriptions, examples and definitions should make complex topics easy to understand.

An informative speech is one that

intends to educate the audience on a

particular topic.
In an informative
speech, how the
information is
presented will
determine how the
audience receives it.
The main goal of an informative
speech is to provide enlightenment
regarding a specific topic in which the
audience knows nothing about.
Its goal is not to sway the audience
to the speaker’s point of view.
Details are laid
before the audience
so they can learn
about a subject
they are interested
in or make
educated decisions.
Informative Speeches use
descriptions,
demonstrations, vivid
explanations, and definitions
to explain a subject. These
make a complex topic easy to
understand.
Informative Speeches offer a
different point of view and
provide knowledge especially
useful and interesting
information.
What are the four types of
informative speech?
● The main types of
informative speeches include
definition, descriptive,
explanatory and
demonstrative.
A definition speech explains
the meaning, philosophy or
theory of a specific topic that
the audience does not know
much.
A definition speech gives a
statement expressing the
essential nature of something.
Its main goal is to educate
the audience so that they may
understand the main points of
the subject.
A descriptive
speech creates
a vivid picture in
a person’s mind
regarding an
object, person,
animal, or place.
It is a sketch or
account of anything
in words, or
enumeration of the
essential qualities
of the subject.
A descriptive speech helps
the speaker create an
accurate mental picture in
the mind of the audience
regarding a specific person,
place, or thing.
An explanatory speech
explains an idea, a process,
an event, or a state of a
topic and goes into the details
associated with a particular
topic and tries to simplify it for
an audience.
Explanatory
speeches explain,
describe, and
inform the audience
about a given topic.
Typically, they focus on the
“how and why” rather than
just telling the audience
about the subject.
A demonstrative
speech describes
how to perform an
action or explains
how to do
something.
A demonstrative speech is
a form of informative speech
where the speaker’s primary
purpose is to teach the
audience how to complete
a task or a process
through a series of steps.
