DTS 402 PDM Hex

This document provides design criteria for heat exchangers in 3 paragraphs and 3 bullet points: - It specifies TEMA Class R and includes design requirements for fouling factors, tube materials, and turndown ratios. - It lists oversizing requirements for different heat exchanger types like overhead condensers, effluent coolers, and reboilers. - It indicates valves and connections needed like specifying separate 2" steam-out connections.

PROCESS DESIGN MANUAL - HEAT EXCHANGERS

1. General

This process criteria governs the general requirements for the process design of heat exchangers. A
process design data sheet using DTS-302 shall be prepared for each unit.

2. Design criteria

Heat exchangers will be specified according to TEMA Class R.

Square pitch will be specified, for easier cleaning, when the shell side fouling factor is 0.0004
h.◦ C.m2/kcal or greater.

U tubes will be specified when the tube side fouling factor is less than 0.0004 h.◦ C.m2/kcal.

Double-pipe or multiple-tube type exchangers will be specified where appropriate.

Unless another value is specified, turndown ratio of 40% will be taken into account. Specially heat
exchangers shall be checked in this regard.

Overhead condensers have to be oversized to take into account the greater of either 110% of the
estimated operating duty or the duty increase of the corresponding reboiler.

To take into account the risk of undersizing of heat recovery systems (i.e. feed effluent, feed-bottom),
the following oversizing is typically specified:

• Effluent cooler (or feed preheater): 10% of cooler duty (or preheater duty) or 5% of feed/effluent
exchange duty, whichever is greater.

• Reboiler: 5% of feed/bottom exchange or 10% of reboiler duty, whichever is greater.

• Bottom cooler: 10% of cooler duty or 5% of feed/bottom exchange duty, whichever is greater.

Normally, a fouling factor of 0.0004 h◦ Cm2/kcal for cooling water shall be considered.

A gate or butterfly valve will be provided on the water return line from each exchanger.

For flow adjustments, a globe or butterfly valve shall be installed on water supply line.

3. Nozzles

Separate steam-out connections will be specified and sized 2".
