FOURTH MEETING

SIMPLE SENTENCE
What is a sentence?
The examples of sentences:
1. The mechanic brought your tools.
2. It is a sunny day.
3. She looks gorgeous.
4. Who is there?

These are not sentences:


1. Is very handsome man.
2. The woman angry.
3. The girl gave.
4. When I finish my education.
Command Sentences:
1. Be calm down.
2. Wait for me!

Negative Commands:
1. Don’t drink too much!
2. Don’t cry!

** A sentence is a group of words that contains a subject


and a verb and expresses a complete thought.
Writing Practice 1

Direction:
1. Read each group of word out loud.
2. Decide which one is a complete sentence and which one is not.
3. Write S (for sentence) and NS (for not a sentence).
4. Explain why the NS word groups is not a sentence.

Simple Sentence Definition
 A simple sentence (or independent
clause) is a word group that contains a
subject and a verb and forms a complete
thought:

• The girls rowed past the dock.

 In this example, girls is the subject,


rowed is the verb, and the entire word
group forms a complete thought— that is,
it makes sense by itself.
Subject

 Subject is what or who does something which can be a pronoun or


noun.
Examples:
1. Cindy found a hat in the play yard.
(Who found a hat in the play yard?- Cindy)
2. The school bus arrives on time.
( What does arrive on time ?- The school bus)
3. Noodle is my favorite food.
(What is my favorite food?- Noodle)
Verb

 Verb is word of phrase which describes an action, condition, or


experience.
1. Action Verb: a verb that shows an action (run, walk, drive, cook, etc)
a. Transitive Verb: a verb that needs direct object (bring, send,
owe, contain, buy, show, take, tell, etc)
Example: Sandy drives a car every day.
→ drive is a transitive verb, a car is a direct object of drives
b. Intransitive Verb: a verb that does not need a direct object.
Usually it is followed by adjective, adverb, or preposition ( come,
explode, go, run, cry, swim, smile)
Example: Michael smiles every time.
→ smile is an intransitive verb that does not need an object to have
a complete thought.
Verb

 Note: There are several verbs that can be transitive verb and
intransitive verb ( set, leave, run, give, study, teach, write, improve, etc)
Example: He set the stage alone. (The verb set is a transitive verb)
The sun set low over the island. (The verb of set is an
intransitive verb)
2. Linking Verb is a verb that links to the subject with the rest of the
sentence. It does not have an object. (be, become, look, feel, smell,
sound, and taste)
Example: We are students ( are- links we and students)
Armand seems very upset today (seems- links Armand
and very upset today)
Object
 Object is a person or thing that is affected by the action
of a verb or involved in the result of an action, or noun,
pronoun, or noun phrase that represents that person or
thing.
Examples of sentences have objects:
1. The police arrested the thief.
2. Rudy lost his key.
Example of not all sentences have objects:
1. My uncle lives in Bandung
2. The sun is shining today
3. They are travelling on Sunday

Simple Sentence Pattern
Actually, there are five basic patterns of the Simple
Sentences.
1. SV (Subject +Verb): The Baby is crying.
2. SVO (Subject + Verb +Object): We received a parcel.
3. SVIODO (Subject + Verb + Indirect Object +
Direct Object) : She made me a cake.
4. SVC (Subject + Verb +Complement): Her dreams
come true.
5. SVOC (Subject + Verb + Object +Complement): She
got her new shoes wet
Simple Sentence Structure
 1 subject, 1 verb:
 The girls rowed past the dock.
 2 subjects, 1 verb:

 Sarah and Tiffany raised the sail.


 1 subject, 2 verbs:

 The wind had fallen but was rising


quickly by late afternoon.
 2 subjects, 2 verbs:

 Gulls and terns circled overhead or


floated on the water.
Simple sentence structure
 Verb before subject for effect:
 Across the waves to the island sped the boat .
 Verb before subject i n a question:
 Was the island inhabited?
 Verb before a n d after subject i n a question:
 Had anyone gone there before?
 There + ve r b before subject:

 There are no people on the island.


 Here + ve r b before subject:

 Here is a small harbour

 Identify the sentence pattern whether it is SV, SVO,
