Assignment 3 – Methods of well control
SIDPP (Shut-in drill pipe pressure = difference between the formation pressure at the bottom of
the well and the hydrostatic pressure in the drill pipe) = 600 psi
PSCR (Up Riser) = 700 psi for TVD
PSCR (Up Riser) = 1050 psi for MD
Pump Output = 0.117 bbl/stks
Drill Pipe Cap = 0.01776 bbl/ft
BHA Cap = 1000' X 0.008 bbl/ft
a) Find for TVD
1. Kill Mud wt
[SIDPP (psi) ÷ TVD (ft) ÷ 0.052] + Original Mud Density (ppg) = (600 / (10000 *
0.052)) + 10 = 11.15 ppg
2. ICP (Initial circulating pressure )
PSCR (Up Riser) for TVD (psi) + SIDPP (psi) = 700 + 600 = 1300 psi
3. FCP (Final Circulating pressure)
(Kill Mud Density (ppg) / Original Mud Density (ppg)) × Kill Rate Circulating
Pressure (psi) = (11.15 * 700) / 10 = 780.5 psi
4. Drill String Cap
(TVD – Bottom-hole Assembly) * Drill Pipe Cap + Bottom-hole Assemble * BHA
Cap = (10000 - 1000) * 0.01776 + 1000 * 0.008 = 167.84 bbl/ft
5. Strokes to Disp D.string= Drill String Cap/ Pump Output
Disp D.string = 167.84 / 0.117 = 1435 strokes
6. Press Step Down= (ICP-FCP)/ Strokes to Disp D.string
= (1300 – 780.5) / 1435 = 0.415
7. To construct graph ICP and FCP and strokes to displace the drill string then draw a
line between the two points.
b) Find for MD
8. Kill Mud wt
[SIDPP (psi) ÷ TVD (ft) ÷ 0.052] + Original Mud Density (ppg) = ( 600 / (15000 *
0.052)) + 10 = 11.2 ppg
9. ICP
PSCR (Up Riser) for MD (psi) + SIDPP (psi) = 1050 + 600 = 1650 psi
10. FCP
Kill Mud Density (ppg) / Original Mud Density (ppg)) × Kill Rate Circulating
Pressure (psi) = (11.2 * 1050) / 10 = 1176 psi
11. Drill String Cap
(TVD – Bottom-hole Assembly) * Drill Pipe Cap + Bottom-hole Assemble * BHA
Cap = (15000 - 1000) * 0.01776 + 1000 * 0.008 = 258 bbl/ft
12. Strokes to Disp D.string= Drill String Cap/ Pump Output
Disp D.string = 258 / 0.117 = 2205 strokes
13. Press Step Down= (ICP-FCP)/ Strokes to Disp D.string
= (1650 – 1123.5) / 2205 = 0.238
14. To construct graph ICP and FCP and strokes to displace the drill string then draw a
line between the two points.

Strokes from A to B
2500 * 0.01776 = 44.4
44.4/0.117 = 380 strokes
Static drill pipe pressure drop (C) = SIDPP – ((TVD (C) / TVD) * SIDPP) = 600 –
(10000 / 10000 * 600) = 0 psi
FPIAP (C) = SCR + ((MD (C) / MD) * p SCR) = 1050 + ((12500 / 15000) * 126) = 1155

Pressure at C = 0 + 1155 = 1155 psi
Pressure Drop from B to C = 1521 – 1155 = 366 psi
Strokes from B to C
(12500 – 2500) * 0.01776 = 177.6
177.6 / 0.117 = 1518 strokes
