COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES

INTRODUCTION

This course is based on the premise that modern organizations exist in ever dynamic and
complex environments which pose consistent threat to organisations’ effectiveness and
survival. It therefore becomes pertinent to establish and maintain strategic planned change in
order to remain competitive in these volatile environments. To this end, the course
Organisational Change & Development involves strategies, processes and structures which
capacitate organisations to respond and manage environmental changes as well as remain
competitive.

OBJECTIVES

The overarching objective of this course therefore is to examine the theory, perspectives, and
practice of planned change programmes that aim not only at keeping organizations afloat but
ensuring that appropriate diagnosis of the challenges is made to ensure efficient change
programmes. The course also examines strategies of empowering organizations, aiding them
to rely on internal expertise and resources as well as to diagnose problems and effect the
required changes.

Cognisant of the vastness and complexity of the subject, only a few major themes shall be
covered. An analytical framework which categorises aspects of change and reveals the issues
that affect the change shall be used. The categories shall be as follows; driving change;
change devices/levers; change enactors; maintaining change. The topics to be covered will
include;

 INTRODUCTION: Definition, Significance, Levels and Models of Organisational


Change
 DRIVING CHANGE: Theoretical concepts, perspectives of managing change;
 CHANGE LEVERS/DEVICES: Strategy and change; Change tools; Human Resource
Management & organisational Change
 CHANGE ENACTORS: Leadership for change; Power and resistance to change.
 MANTAINING CHANGE: Measuring, monitoring and maintaining change; Change
& sustainability.
