Implementation design principles (IDPs)
What are implementation design principles for SAP SuccessFactors solutions?

▪ Implementation design principles (IDPs) are documents that complement existing implementation guides
by addressing real-life implementation challenges as well as frequently asked questions.
▪ They are best practices verified by the product in collaboration with our partners and services.
▪ IDPs give structured guidance to address challenges via product configuration, design guidance and also
at times workarounds to avoid typical implementation pitfalls.

SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central data migration: cutover optimization using Infoporter

▪ This IDP provides ways of optimizing the cutover process during data migration and initial replication to
SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central with the aid of the Infoporter solution.
▪ It shows how to handle cutover activities like delta migration, freeze period, testing data replication in
simulation mode, performing initial and full replication in the right sequence from Employee Central.
▪ To access Infoporter, install PA_SE_IN or the new addon-on ECS4HCM on SAP S/4HANA. Mainstream
maintenance for PA_SE_IN will end on 31.12.2027 with optional extended maintenance until 31.12.2030.
For more information on upgrading to the new add-on & its benefits, refer to the IDP, SAP Note 3250816 &
SAP Help documentation.

Employee Central: employee data migration strategy and implementation considerations

▪ This IDP provides strategies as well as

considerations for employee data migration
using Employee Central (EC) import
framework for greenfield implementation,
addressing functional and technical
requirements using leading industry practices.
▪ It provides details on how to import active

Considerations for employee data history:

▪ Compensation merit cycle
▪ Country-specific regulations
▪ Variable pay
▪ Legacy system licensing
▪ Trend reporting

How much history to include:

▪ The recommendation at this point is to only include 1 year of
actual history to support the Compensation Merit process for
the year that the system is going live.
▪ Load an independent hire record dated before the year of
go-live. The hire record must reflect the user’s actual hire
date. Include any historical changes that occur during the
year which will affect job information, compensation
information, and personal information. For the above EC
entities, all the fields that are relevant for Compensation and
Payroll need to be considered.

Employee Central Side-by-Side: deployment and solution architecture considerations

▪ This IDP provides details of the Side-by-Side

deployment solution and how it can be applied
to a cross-country, multi-system environment,
as well as how to transition from a Side-by-Side
(SBS) deployment to a Core Hybrid landscape.
▪ Side-by-Side deployment occurs when a
customer continues to use SAP HCM on-
premise and Employee Central with EC having
mini master data of all employees.
▪ Core Hybrid deployment is when EC becomes
the system of record for all employees and data
flows from EC into SAP HCM for running payroll Side by Side deployment (EP is fed by HRIS sync) Core Hybrid Deployment

and time-related processes.

Employee Central Core Hybrid: handling employee identifiers

▪ This IDP provides details of employee identifiers existing in

Employee Central, Talent Suite, and SAP HCM, and how
these identifiers map and relate to each other. It also provides
recommendations for mapping the identifiers for both existing
Talent customers implementing EC and greenfield EC
implementations.
▪ Person ID External is stored as a standard field on the
Biographical Information portlet and is mutable. It is unique
and employees have only one ID in their lifecycle at the
company. It connects all person-related information portlets.
▪ User ID is stored as a standard field on the Employee Profile

employment of an employee. It is immutable.

Employee Central Core Hybrid: data and process distribution strategy and details

▪ These IDPs provide architectural and business

process guidance for distributing organizational
and employee master data between Employee
Central and SAP ERP HCM system.
▪ They cover strategy for identifying which infotype
data is relevant for EC and how HR actions are
distributed between EC and SAP ERP when local
processes are involved.
▪ In case of full cloud transition, the best option is
to migrate the infotype data mastered in SAP ERP
(the country-specific infotypes and the non-basic
international ones) directly to the new cloud
payroll providers, just before decommissioning the
SAP ERP HCM system.

Organization data management in SAP SuccessFactors solutions

▪ The IDP explains the organization

management structures and the factors that
influence the design in a Core Hybrid
landscape.
▪ Different factors like Reporting, Workflow,
Security, Talent modules, and
visualization of org. structure in SAP
SuccessFactors determine the overall
design of the organizational structure.
▪ Additionally, it explains the transition from
chief position concept in SAP HCM to the
position-to-position hierarchy in

How to set up payment-related processes in Employee Central

▪ Managing Pay Scale Progression

− This IDP provides details on how Employee Central can be configured to
achieve automatic grade step progression with minimal setup and
maintenance. It also provides a mechanism to update the employee’s
compensation and job-related information to match the pay rate of a new pay
scale level.
▪ Managing Automated Pay Increase
− This IDP provides an efficient process on automated pay increases for
common and complex scenarios for employees who come under collective
agreements, considering various factors like system performance, accuracy,
and maintainability.
▪ Indirect Valuation of Pay Component
− This IDP explains how to automate pay component assignment and its
valuation for different employee groups and salary structures across various
compensation-related processes in an effective way.
▪ Manage Payroll Updates in EC and ERP
− This IDP provides guidance on how to set up Employee Central in a way that
the necessary checks already occur during data input in Employee
Central, rather than during replication to payroll systems.

Summary

▪ Using IDPs ensures implementation is aligned to needs and future

product roadmap, giving a competitive edge to adapt constantly to
changing business needs. For example, use Infoporter & EC import
framework for data migration.
▪ Applying IDPs results in time and cost savings, risk reduction, and
greater customer satisfaction, thus enabling higher ROI. Use IDPs
related to deployment strategy & employee identifiers to set the
foundation right.
▪ IDPs consider long-term aspects like scalability and operational
efficiency too, thus ensuring low operating cost. Make use of IDPs
related to managing pay processes in the cloud along with others
discussed in Functional IDPs.
▪ IDPs also reduce the risk of customer-specific implementations by
guiding them with industry leading practices.
