Master of Education in School Counseling

In accordance with the Grand Canyon University Professional Dispositions of Learners,

dispositions are the values, commitments, and professional ethics that influence behavior toward

others. Furthermore, dispositions may lead to actions and patterns of professional conduct of

school counselors in training (2022). Throughout the course, various professional dispositions of

leaners were discussed during weekly topics. These dispositions provided me an opportunity to

reflect upon my ability and responsibilities as a school counselor in training at Magnolia High

School.

Professional dispositions that I have efficiently demonstrated include the respect for the

diversity of others, fairness, professional conduct, honesty, and compassion. In reference to the

GCU Professional Dispositions of Learners, respecting the diversity of others focuses on

appreciating and embracing cultural diversity; fairness is demonstrated through promoting social

justice and equity; Professional conduct is the ability to remain prompt, ethical, and maintain

self-care; Honesty is demonstrated by upholding high standards of trust, stewardship, and

integrity; lastly, compassion is demonstrated by being genuine while providing academic, career,

social, and emotional support.

Magnolia High School possesses a multicultural and diverse student population. A high

percentage of students enrolled at Magnolia come from low socioeconomic families. Therefore,

respecting the diversity of students was necessary during my practicum. As a school counselor in

training (SCIT), I demonstrated respect for diversity by engaging and assisting all students that

requested school counseling services. While performing Indirect and Direct hours, my actions

and behaviors demonstrated professional conduct. For example, I maintained a great attendance

record and would always collaborate during weekly staff meetings.

In continuation, Magnolia possesses a high percentage of underperforming students.

Therefore, the counseling department conducts student audits in an effort to assess and monitor

student performance. During my practicum, I assisted my clinical site supervisor conduct student

audits for underclassman and upperclassman. While performing these audits, it was essential to

remain honest and compassionate for certain students were struggling to perform academically or

have special needs. Moreover, I observed my clinical site supervisor demonstrate the following

dispositions: professional conduct, honesty, compassion, and curiosity.

Moving forward, during my internship there were moments I wish that I could’ve said

more during a meeting between a student and my clinical site supervisor. Also, there were

moments I wanted to pitch assessment resources during department collaboration meetings.

Therefore, dispositions I want to develop include advocacy and curiosity.

Advocacy is very important in school counseling for it provides an opportunity for school

counselors to address student needs and develop a comprehensive curriculum. In effort to

develop advocacy, school counselors must demonstrate curiosity. Being curious includes asking

high thinking questions as well as, encouraging collaboration and teamwork to solve authentic

problems. As I mentioned earlier, I believe my insight and skillset could have benefited the

school counseling department during certain discussions.

In continuation, I believe the most important dispositions for school counselors to possess

include professional conduct, advocacy, compassion, honesty, fairness, and respect for the

diversity of others. As I continue my education, I intend to develop my skillset and ability by

consulting with professional school counselors.

In conclusion, during my practicum I was able to demonstrate strengths in multiple

dispositions including respect for the diversity of others, fairness, professional conduct, honesty,

and compassion. As I continue my education, I intend to become more curious on processes and

procedures as well as, develop an advocacy role. Lastly, I have observed many students require

various forms of assistance during my practicum. Therefore, it is highly important that school

counselors demonstrate professional conduct and remain dedicated to maintaining a student’s

mental and physical well-being.
