Diffusion and Osmosis Worksheet

This document is a review sheet for an AP Biology lab on diffusion and osmosis. It defines key terms like diffusion, osmosis, hypertonic, and hypotonic. It describes how a semipermeable membrane allows water but not solutes to pass through. It explains that water moved in diffusion and osmosis from an area of high water concentration to low concentration. The review sheet also includes diagrams of the setup for demonstrations and experiments on diffusion and osmosis.

Review Sheet

1. Define diffusion:

- Diffusion is the movement of molecules from an area of high concentration

to low concentration.

2. How is osmosis different?

- is a specific type of diffusion. Osmosis is the flow of water from a high to a

low-level concentration. Since just the movement of water is involved, it
differs from diffusion molecules.

3. How does a semipermeable membrane act?

- A semipermeable membrane is a barrier that will only allow some molecules

to pass through while blocking the passage of other molecules. A
semipermeable barrier essentially acts as a filter.

4. Define hypertonic:

- Hypertonic is a term used to describe a solution with a higher concentration

of solute (dissolved particles) compared to another solution.

5. Define hypotonic:

- Hypotonic is a term used to describe a solution with a lower concentration of

solute (dissolved particles) compared to another solution.

6. Why did the water move?

- Water molecules can travel from an area with a high concentration of water
to one with a low concentration thanks to the diffusion process, specifically
osmosis. Because water molecules are tiny and may travel easily through the
structure of a semipermeable membrane, water can pass through it.

7. Why didn’t the sugar move?

- The semipermeable membrane prevents the sugar from passing through,

thus it did not move. The cell membrane is selectively permeable, which
means it allows certain substances, like water, to pass through while blocking
the movement of larger solute molecules, including sugar. The membrane has
tiny pores or channels that allow water to pass but restrict the movement of
larger molecules based on their size and charge.

8. Diagram the set-up of the Diffusion Demonstration:

9. How can you test for glucose?

- Test tapes can be used to measure glucose.

10. How can you test for starch?

- IKI can be used to test for starch and will turn blue if starch and IKI are both
present.

11. What can pass through the dialysis tubing?

- IKI and glucose

12. What cannot?

- The starch cannot pass through the dialysis tubing

13. Diagram the set up of the Potato Lab

14. Why did some potatoes gain mass and some lose mass?

- Due to the water moving from a high concentration (outside) to a low

concentration (inside the potato), the distilled water-immersed potatoes are
the ones that acquired mass. The potatoes dipped in a sugar-water solution,
on the other hand, lost bulk. The water inside the potatoes is a low
concentration area compared to the sugar-water solution would move.
