 Best practices are based on the orientation of the
business school

27
UCP-FDP Report 2020
 Business education is an academic discipline vs.
as a professional discipline
 If we treat business education as an academic
discipline, we will depend upon different
activities, but if we treat it as a professional
discipline, we will depend upon different best
practices
 Business school’s journey started with a
practitioner’s approach
 Practitioners were technically sound but weak in
conceptualization and theory building
 Practitioners shifted their professional to a
scientific approach but are still being criticized
 Sustaining practitioner orientation is easier in
professional education like medicine and law and
sustaining a scientific orientation and approach is
easier in pure sciences
 Business education is more variegated: thus
business graduates can be hired for many
different tasks
 Students need scientifically prestigious education
with relevance
 Should not consider this as a dilemma rather it
should be treated as a paradox
 There will be chances of paradoxical tension in
this case also and emotional ambivalence
 Faculty should be involved in multi-disciplinary
research (intra-school and inter departments)
 We must be scientifically prestigious and we must
be relevant as well
 Consultancy can be one of the options
 Professionals should teach but cautiously
 We can have team teaching to manage this
 Professionals can be instrumental in developing
linkages with the industry
 Business school should run its own business

28

 Seating students serial wise as per the attendance
sheet during assessments
 Teach students to read the question carefully and
avoid panic
 Cheating leads to unethical practices in personal
and professional life
 More weightage should be assigned to the class
activities and participation
 Students’ themselves are responsible for their
grades, so they need to put in real hard work and
effort
 If you make a mistake, accept it. Life goes on
 No begging for marks: Self-respect is very
important
 The paper review is not a begging session
 Punctuality is important
 Relate examples from a familiar environment or
surrounding
 Technology brings choices, whether to use it
productively or misuse it
 Any person can be defined by the choices he/she
makes
