Changing of the old forestry

Steady-state forestry
- Reduced variability

Ecosystem management

Resilience-based management

- Historical variability - Foster variability

- Prevent disturbance
- Maximize sustained yield

- Accept disturbance
- Manage for multiple uses

- Foster creative disturbance

- Maximize flexibility for future options

TRIAD: a functional zoning approach

CAS management (73%)
Emulating some element of natural dist.

Longer rotation & more diverse types of cuts

Retention of 5 to 10% on clearcuts (50% of land) 30 to 50% partial cutting (other 50% of land) Enrichment planting

Protected areas (12%)

Large superficies Including all ecosystems

Much less directed silvicultural interventions

Management at the landscape scale

Necessary control

Functional zoning
Intensive management (15%)
. More diversified intensive management . More diversified and better spatially planned plantations

TRIAD: a functional zoning approach

Complex Adaptive System manag. (50-80%)
Emulating some element of natural dist. Longer rotation & more diverse types of cuts
Retention of 5 to 10% on clearcuts (50% of land)
30 to 50% partial cutting (other 50% of land) Enrichment planting

According to our results and the results of many other studies, the functional zoning (like TRIADE) is better at achieving all of our objectives (social, economic and environmental) than the other approaches

Social acceptability
Kati Berninger (Ph.D.

Conclusion
Our view and understanding of what is a forest has changed We need to endorse a dynamic, complex and resilience view of the forest Intensive management and plantations are keys in achieving our goals, but one can innovate in terms of plantations to reduce its negative socioecological impacts

TRIAD is a truly sustainable forestry approach that is well adapted to many situations
