Honors Forum Reflection

I learned a great deal in Honors Forum. The class has allowed me to become a better critical

thinker because the course required us to analyze and reflect on our readings in an open forum rather

than read the texts and provide simple summaries. Honors Forum has also helped strengthen my

confidence in my ideas. Being forced to have discussions in an open forum has made me realize that

there’s nothing wrong with me sharing my ideas. Each individual in our discussions had their own

opinions and ideas about the textual works we read. Somethings I agreed with and somethings I

disagreed with. I learned that even within our small honors class there was a diverse range of opinions

and no one was wrong. Everyone’s interpretations and opinions drew from their own personal

experiences, it was just a matter of opening my eyes to that small reality.

The work I choose to show case for Honors Forum is my analysis essay over “Sonny’s Blues.” I’ve

always been somewhat of an altruistic person “Sonny’s Blues” really stood out to that side of me. It

made me want to improve as a person moving forward, put myself in the shoes of the people around

me. Everyone is unique and deserves to have their side of the story heard and understood. “Sonny’s

Blues” made me realize people typically have a reason for what they’re doing. If it’s self-destructive,

maybe it’s a coping mechanism or something of the sort. As people we must open our ears and hearts to

help. If we don’t know why someone is doing something we can’t help or even give them their full

support. “Sonny’s Blues” has made me overall want to be a more understanding person to the world

around me. My analysis over the work documents the importance of putting yourself in the place of

another person and really trying to understand their perspective.

The discussion in class we had over “Sonny’s Blues” was also what I’d call a pivotal point for me

within Honors Forum. It’s the point within the class where I really realized everyone’s interpretation is

based on personal experience. My classmates Interpretations on “Sonny’s Blues” were all vastly

different from one another. Some of my classmates choose to focus living conditions, family, friends, et

cetera. The things that happen within a person’s life whether it be how they were raised or some events

in their life dictate how they think. At one point in the discussion poverty was brought up and my

opinion differed a lot from the person next to me. I had to take what I had learned from “Sonny’s Blues”

and apply it directly then and there. I had to realize that because even though I disagreed neither of us

were wrong. We both were using former experience as the base of our opinions and there was nothing

inherently wrong with that.
