Cambridge, Preliminary English Test for Schools, Listening. Sample Test 2.
There are four parts to the test. You will hear each part twice.
We will now stop for a moment.
Please ask any questions now, because you must not speak during the test.

1 Where are the students going to visit first on the tour?

F: Good morning and welcome to the science museum. We’re going to visit many different rooms
today. We’ll end up in the most popular area, which tells you all about space. You’ll be able to
see some real spaceships there, which certainly travelled a lot faster than the old steam trains
and cars in our transport gallery that we’ll see in just a minute. Your teacher’s told me you’re
all doing a project on computers, so the room we’ll go to just after that will be of great interest
I’m sure.

2 What will the girl take to the park?

F: The weather forecast looks good for our day out in the park tomorrow.
M: It sure does. Have you still got your baseball stuff, the bat and so on? You could bring that.
F: It was my brother’s actually and I think he gave it away to someone. Anyway, I thought I was
supposed to bring the drinks and cups.
M: Ben’s already bought those but we don’t have any music organised and you’ve got a guitar,
haven’t you?
F: OK, and I’ve got a case to carry it in too so that’s easy.

3 What did the boy do at the weekend?

F: How was your weekend? I hope you didn’t have to spend too much time on that
homework project.

M: I was hoping I’d get it finished last week actually but it took far longer than I thought, so I
didn’t even end up with enough time to play tennis with Max. We play every weekend if we
can.
F: There’s always next weekend…
M: True. I was supposed to play video games with James as well but I had to cancel that too.
F: Oh well, at least you got it done.

4 What does the girl want on her pizza?

M: So which pizza do you fancy?
F: Umm, I’m not sure, Dad – there are so many to choose from.
M: You usually have one with pineapple and sliced sausage on, don’t you?
F: Yes, but I’m just wondering whether to have something different. What are you having?
M: One of the vegetarian ones with mushrooms and sliced pepper.
F: That sounds nice. The tomato and cheese is maybe a bit boring so I think I’m going to have the
same as you.
M: Good choice!
F: Oh, and can I have a lemonade too, please?
M: Of course.

5 What would the boy like to borrow from his friend?

M: Hi Andrew, I’m just calling to ask a favour. You know I’m going snowboarding next month with
my family? I’ve managed to borrow a snowboard at last. Danny let me have his old one but I
was wondering if you’d be able to lend me a pair of gloves. The ones you use for skiing would
be great and they’ll match the coat I got for my birthday really nicely too. I got a similar one to
you, actually, so at least I won’t have to borrow yours!

6 Which activity did the girl enjoy most on the school trip?
M: How was the school trip to the activity centre?
F: It was good, thanks. The three activities we did were all really exciting. I’d done one of them
before, the climbing, but I’d never tried the others. I’m not sure I’ll do water skiing again as
I seemed to spend far more time falling into the water than actually skiing on it. The horse

riding was really nice, though, once I’d got used to the horse, but I still don’t think it was as
good as going up the climbing wall.

7 What is the minimum customers must spend to get a discount?
M: Welcome to Games Superstore. Remember that if you buy items to the value of £30 or more,
we’ll give you 10% off. All our video games systems have a £20 discount at the moment but this
special offer finishes at the end of this week, so get yours now! If you’re looking for a better
system, why not let us buy your old one? That’s right! We’ll give you £50 off any new system
worth more than £200 in exchange for your old one. So what are you waiting for?

PART TWO For each question, choose the correct answer.
8 You will hear a boy telling his friend about a new bike.
Pause
F: Hey, is that a new bike?
M: Yeah, it’s cool! I’d grown too big for the old one – I couldn’t move my legs properly and it made
my back hurt. This one’s the complete opposite, though. I was kind of disappointed they only
had it in these colours, but I guess I didn’t buy it for its appearance.
F: Really? I like the colours... It looks like it’ll go really quickly.
M: It’s actually designed for climbing up hills rather than going down them at high speed. We
should go for a ride together some time.
F: I’d really like that.

9 You will hear two friends talking about a story a classmate has written.
Pause
M: I’m glad Peter let us read his story – I really enjoyed it.
F: Me too, especially the last part. I couldn’t stop reading it, even though it was time for our next
class.
M: It was just as good as any of the thrillers I’ve read. The last couple of pages were brilliant. I
liked the two main people in it too.
F: The woman was fun. I wasn’t sure how realistic the man was, though.
M: I don’t think I’ve ever read a story that’s all about skateboarding before.
F: I’ve seen quite a few in comics, actually. I think he probably got the idea from there.

10 You will hear two friends talking about a new coach at their football club.
Pause
M: What did you think of the new football coach?
F: She certainly doesn’t have favourites in the team that she’s much nicer to like the last one did.
M: That’s true. But when she was telling me what I needed to do to improve the way I take free
kicks, I couldn’t really understand what she was saying.
F: Yeah? I didn’t have that problem at all. She makes us run around the pitch for most of the
sessions, though, so we’re not actually playing football. I’m not against that but I think we
should be spending more time playing a game.

11 You will hear two friends talking about art classes at school.
Pause
F: What lesson have you got next?
M: Art.
F: Oh, I wish I did.
M: Yeah? There are loads of people in my class who complain about it and say that we should be
able to choose something else if we’re not interested in art.
F: Do you agree with them?
M: Not really. In fact, I wish we could spend more time working on our paintings and things. It’s
not that I think I’m going to become a famous artist or anything – it’s just that I work quite
slowly and never seem to finish what I’m doing.
F: Oh well, we’d better go.
Pause

12 You will hear two friends talking about travelling to school.
Pause
M: Why do you walk to school? The school bus goes from outside your house.
F: It does, but then it goes all over town picking up other people, so I actually arrive at school
before it does, even though I leave at the same time.
M: But if you got the bus, you’d be able to see some of your mates.
F: True, but I’m with them all day anyway. Besides, it’s good to have some time on your own.
That’s why I say no when my mum or dad ask if I want them to take me to school on their way
to work.

13 You will hear two friends talking about online videos.

Pause
F: Have you seen any interesting videos recently?
M: Yes, one or two... including that one your drama teacher said was really good.
F: Oh, I’m glad you did, as it’s the sort of thing you usually like – you know, lots of mystery and
excitement. So what did you think?
M: To be honest, I couldn’t really understand what was going on most of the time.

F: In which part?
M: Well, all of it really.
F: Are you sure you weren’t doing something else at the same time as watching it? I didn’t have
any problems following it.
M: Well, I was playing a game on my computer too…

You will hear a boy called Jack giving a class presentation about a visit to a museum
called Amazing Earth.
M: Hi everyone, I want to tell you about a museum called Amazing Earth that I visited last
weekend. It’s all about the planet we live on, Earth. It took us about an hour-and-a-half to get
to the museum. Everyone goes round it in groups and it takes about two-and-a-half hours. We
spent an hour having something to eat there too.
The museum’s split up into several sections. In one of them, you find out how the continents
have moved over time. So, Africa, for example, isn’t in the same place as it was millions of
years ago. At one point, the floor started shaking so you can experience what it actually felt
like. It’s quite scary because you’re not expecting it!
In each section, there are films to watch too. I liked the one about how mountains are made,
as I didn’t know much about it. It was almost as interesting as the video on oceans, which I’ve
always loved finding out about.
As well as the tour, there are different special events on at the museum every month. If I had
the chance to go again, I’d go in August as some real-life explorers will be there talking about
their work. There’s a painting competition in July, which some people might enjoy, or the
science exhibition in September sounds OK.
There’s a great café at the museum too. My mum said that her burger was good, but I didn’t
really fancy one. I soon wished I hadn’t chosen the soup, but I had some chocolate cake
afterwards, and I’d say that’s definitely worth having.
If you’re thinking of going, don’t do what we did and go to the entrance on Creswell Street,
because that’s just for school trips. You need to go to Leithwick Street. I’ll spell that for you –
it’s L-E-I-T-H-W-I-C-K Street.
Thanks for listening!

You will hear an interview with a fifteen year old long-distance runner called Gillian.
M: Welcome to the show, Gillian. You’re quite an experienced runner now, but how did you first
become interested in running?
F: I ran around like most kids when I was younger, especially at the park with my brothers. I
realised it was something I loved doing though, when my school organised a trip into the local
countryside where we had all sorts of races against each other. Most people start racing on a
track, but I had to be different!
M: You started running long-distance races when you were quite young. Why was that?
F: My mum and dad both liked long-distance running but they said I was too young to go with
them. One day, there was a competition near where I lived, which the guy who I train with at
my running club told me about. The runners had to do ten kilometres, and I just thought as I
was watching them, ‘I want to try that too’.
M: How did you feel before your first long-distance race?
F: I couldn’t quite believe how little I’d thought about it, actually. You might think I’d be anxious
about whether I’d actually get to the end of the race or not – but I wasn’t. I suppose that,
because I wasn’t really expecting to be very good, it helped me to relax.
M: You take part in races with adults as well as teenagers these days. How is that?
F: I know before each race that it’ll be almost impossible to come first. Because of that, I just focus
on having a good time, which I really can’t do when I’m running with people my own age. It’s a
good experience, but I need to be a bit older to fully benefit from competing against such good
athletes.
M: What’s the hardest thing about doing so much training?
F: I’ve always been the first one up in our house so going for a run before school doesn’t bother
me. It’s more difficult at weekends, though. When most of my mates are going shopping
together, I’m usually racing. I don’t worry too much about my diet, but that’ll change if I try to
go professional.
M: What are you best at as a runner?
F: Great question! No one has much energy left after running ten kilometres or however long the
race is. I can keep going, though. In fact, as I get near the finishing line I usually speed up and
go past other runners. That’s good because I’m not great at telling how everyone else in the
race is feeling, or deciding when the best time is to increase or decrease my speed.
M: Thanks, Gillian!
