Unknown Salt - 1

The document describes tests conducted on an unknown salt to determine its composition. Preliminary tests showed the salt was white, had an ammonia smell, and was amorphous. Acidification produced carbon dioxide, indicating the presence of carbonate ions. Further tests confirmed carbonate and showed the salt dissolved in water. Tests for cations identified ammonium ions, as sodium hydroxide produced ammonia gas and brown precipitate with Nessler's reagent. The unknown salt was determined to be ammonium carbonate, with carbonate anions and ammonium cations.

UNKNOWN SALT-1

AIM : To analyse the given unknown salt qualitatively for the presence of acidic and basic
radicals and report the tests.

PROCEDURE :

I: PRELIMINARY TESTS:

EXPERIMENT OBSERVATION INFERENCE

1. Physical Examination:
a) Noted the colour of the given White Cu2+, Mn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Fe2+
salt. are absent.

b) Noted the smell of the given Ammonical Smell NH4+ may be present
salt

c) Noted state of the salt Amorphous/flakes --

2. Dry Heating test:
Heated a pinch of salt in a dry A white sublimate is formed NH4+ may be present
