TIME AND DISTANCE

TIME :
The amount of time spent traveling a distance, measured in hours, minutes,
or seconds, is referred to as time.
Time is expressed in terms of seconds(s), minutes (min) and hours (hr).
Time = Distance
Speed
DISTANCE
Distance is the distance that any thing or person must travel to go from one
point to another.
Distance is generally expressed in meters (m), kilometers (km), centimeters
Distance = Speed x Time

Relationship Between Time and Distance

From the above Formula
I.e Distance = Speed x Time
We can see that Time is directly proportional to distance given that the
speed remains constant,
When two vehicles are traveling different distances in different amounts of
time, the time is exactly proportional to the distance.
and
Time = Distance
Speed
From this we can say that as speed grows the time needed will decrease and
vice versa.
Conversion of Time and Distance
The conversion of speed, time and distance into various units is given
below:
● To convert a given data from km/hour to m/sec, we multiply by 5/18.
x km/hr = x × 5 m/sec
18
● To convert a given data m/sec to km/hour, we multiply by 18/5.
x km/hr = x × 18 m/sec
5

Applications of Time and Distance

● If two people travel from two points A and B towards each other,
and they meet at point P. The total Distance covered by them at
the meeting will be AB. The Time taken by both of them to meet
will be the same. As the Time is constant, Distances AP and BP
will be in the ratio of their Speed. Say that the Distance between
A and B is d.
● If speed is kept constant, then the distance covered by an object
is proportional to time. I.e, Distance Time or D1/T1 = D2/T2
● If time is kept Constant then the distance covered by an object
is proportional to speed i.e, Distance Speed (time constant) or
D1/S1 = D2/S2
● When a person covers a certain distance between two certain
places with speed 'a', he gets his destination late by time t, but
when he covers the same distance with speed 'tf, he reaches his
destination t2 time earlier. In this case, the distance between two
places is given by D = ab(t1 + t2)/b-a
● When a person reaches a certain distance with speed 'a', he
gets late by f., time and when he increases his speed by '£>' to
cover the same distance, then he still gets late by u time, in this
case, the distance is

D = (t1-t2)(a+b) a/b

● When two persons A and e travel from points P to Q, a distance

of D with speeds 'a' and '£>', respectively and B reaches Q first,
returns immediately and meets A at R, then

Distance traveled by A = 2 x D (a/(a+b))

Distance traveled by B = 2 x D (b/(a+b))

● A policeman sees a thief at a distance of d. He starts chasing the

thief who is running at a speed of 'a' and policeman is chasing
with a speed of 'ft' (b > a). In this case, the distance covered by
the thief when he is

Caught by the policeman, is given by d(a/(b-a))

● If a man changes his speed to (x/y) of his usual speed and gets
late by t min or reaches early by t min then the usual time taken
by him

= t x X/(y-X) if(y>x) and t x X /(x-y) if (x>y)

EXAMPLES:

Example 1.
18 A policeman sees a chain snatcher at a distance of 50 m. He starts chasing
the chain snatcher who is running with a speed of 2 m/s while the policeman
chases him with a speed of 4 m/s. Find the distance covered by the chain
snatcher when he is caught by the policeman.

Here, d = 50 m, a = 2m/s b = 4 m/s

According to the formula,

Required distance = d (a/(b-a))

= 50 x 2 / (4 - 2)
= 50

Example 2:
P covers a certain distance at a speed of 25 km/h and he reached his
destination 5 minutes late. With a speed of 30 km/h, he reaches his
destination 10 minutes earlier. Find the distance between the starting point
and destination.

Let the required distance be x km.

Therefore, Time taken to cover x km at 25 km/h speed = x/25 hours
Similarly,time taken to cover x km at 30 km/h speed = x/30 hours
Difference between the time taken = 5+10= 15 min = 1/4 hour
Therefore, x/25 - x/30 = 1/4
or
6x - 5x = 150/4 x = 150/4 km

Example 3:
A bus travels for 7 hours, the first half at 30 km/h and the second half at 40
km/h. Find the distance.

Let the distance be x km

Time taken during the first half of total distance = (x/2)/30 = x/60 hours.
Time taken during the second half of total distance= (x/2)/40= x/80 hours.
Therefore, Time taken for the whole journey= x/60+ x/80 = 7 hours.
(4x+3x)/240 = 7 hours.
x=240 km
