Qualitative Research Method

This document discusses qualitative research methods. It provides definitions of qualitative research from Denzin and Lincoln (1994) and Creswell (2013), noting that qualitative research takes an interpretive, naturalistic approach and explores social or human problems to understand meanings. The document then lists characteristics of qualitative research such as multiple realities, meanings and interpretations. It also discusses common qualitative research methods like observations, interviews, focus groups and surveys. The strengths and weaknesses of qualitative research methods are presented. Finally, the document outlines the process of collecting, analyzing and reporting qualitative data research.

-Denzin and Lincoln (1994) say "Qualitative research is multi-
method focus, involving an interpretive, naturalistic approach
to its subject matter.
-Qualitative research is a research method to explore and
understand the meaning that some individuals or groups of
people think come from social or human problems (Creswell,
2013)
the main goal in qualitative research is to create
facts/phenomena so that they are easy to understand
(understandable) and possible according to the model can
produce new hypotheses (Hennink, Hutter &Bailey, 2020;
Sarmanu, 2017).
CHARACTERISTICS OF
QUALITATIVE RESEARCH:
Multiple realities
Meanings and interpretations
Generation of knowledge
Generalization
Human relations
Value systems
Qualitative research is entrenched in the interpretivist, or
constructivist paradigm. Considerations for interpretivist or
constructivism's understandings and beliefs include:
a. Assumptions and values
b. Participant-researcher relationship
c. Methodology (the research strategy)
d. Ontology (the nature of reality)
e. Epistemology or the philosophy of knowledge
f. Axiology ( the value and ethics of the research)
Qualitative method is used to understand people’s
beliefs, experiences, attitudes, behavior, and
interactions.
Qualitative research should be well-planned, with
the objectives and methods being carefully
considered. Research bias should be eliminated
through predetermined methods in studies.
QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
METHOD
These are some of the most common
qualitative methods:
1. Observations
2. Interviews
3. Focus group
4. Surveys
5. Secondary research
STRENGTH OF QUALITATATIVE
RESEARCH

1) Problems can be studied in detail and in depth through words or

narratives
2) Interviews are not limited to specific questions and can be guided by
researchers in real time
3) Research frameworks and directions can be quickly revised as new
information emerges
4) Useful for describing complex phenomena
5) Research is more dynamic and flexible
6) Data based on human experience gained is powerful and sometimes
more interesting than quantitative data
WEAKNESS OF
QUALITATATIVE RESEARCH

1) The quality of research depends heavily on the individual skills of the

researcher and is more easily influenced by the researcher's personal biases
and idiosyncrasies.
2) Accuracy is more difficult to maintain, assess and demonstrate
3) Large volumes of data make analysis and interpretation time-consuming
4) Sometimes this is not well understood and accepted as quantitative
research in the scientific community
5) Anonymity and confidentiality issues can pose problems when presenting
findings.
6) Findings can be more difficult and time-consuming to characterize visually

ANALYZING AND REPORTING
QUALITATIVE DATA
RESEARCH

1. Gathering qualitative data and Conducting research

2.Connect and organize all of the qualitative data
3. coding the qualitative data
4. analyze the data: find meaningful insight
5. report on the data: tell story
