Represent mathematical and real-world problems by plotting points
in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane and interpret coordinate
values of points in the context of the situation.
1. Students will be able to identify the origin and axes in the coordinate
system.
2. Students will be able to plot and label ordered pairs of whole numbers
in the first quadrant.

Strategies Coordinate Plane Graphing Picture worksheet home.
For visual learners, the teacher will have students use their whiteboard desks to
answer practice questions during the “note taking” portion of the lesson.
For kinesthetic learners, the teacher will have students come to the front board
and plot points on the SmartBoard TV.
For auditory learners, the teacher will post extra YouTube graphing videos on
Canvas (online learning support) for students to watch for homework.
For students with eyesight problems, the teacher will move these students to
the front of the room where desks are closer to the SmartBoard.
For struggling students, the teacher and math paraprofessional will walk around
and monitor throughout the lesson, especially when students begin to work
independently.
For struggling students, the teacher will partner students with tiered students (if
needed) during the independent work time.

E Description
Engagement *Differentiation strategy* Move students to the front of the room if they are
struggling to see.
Objective 1 and 2 – The teacher will explain that we will be focusing on how to
identify the origin and axes in the coordinate system. Teacher will explain that
we will be learning how to plot and label ordered pairs of whole numbers in the
first quadrant.
The teacher will begin by displaying the “Coordinate Plane and Ordered Pairs
Song | 1st Quadrant” song for students. (2:29)
YouTube Video
Once the video is complete, the teacher will ask students to get out their Math
Journals. The teacher will have their own Math Journal under the SmartBoard
TV camera, so students can see their notes clearly.
Engagement The teacher will begin by writing the words Coordinate Plane and Ordered Pair
Assessment Review, since this lesson is a review of their 5th grade graphing standard.
Objective 1, 2, and 6 – The students will learn how to identify the origin and
axes in the coordinate system. Students will answer how to plot and label
ordered pairs of whole numbers in the first quadrant. Students will be able to use
the SmartBoard TV to take notes on plotting plots on a coordinate plane.
The teacher will ask students after the YouTube video what a coordinate plane,
the first quadrant, and both the x and y axes are.
The teacher will have students write down these definitions after students
answer out loud as a class.
Exploration Next, students will write the rap to the song they just sung about:

On the x axis, count to the right. On the y axis, count from the ground.
The teacher will pass out a worksheet with 6 graphing exercises and 3
Christmas-themed graphing word problems.
During this time, the teacher will lead students in labeling the Quadrant 1
coordinate plane and practicing plotting points on their graph. They will complete
#1-4 together.
Exploration *Differentiation strategy* For struggling students, the teacher will partner
Assessment students with tiered students (if needed) during the independent work time.
Objective 1, 2, and 5 – The students will be able to label the origin and axes in
the coordinate system and know how to plot and label ordered pairs of whole
numbers in the first quadrant. Students are also able to work with partners and
build networks when customizing their learning environments in ways that
support the learning process.
They will complete #5 with their partner. The teacher will encourage students to
share and collaborate with their partner using their whiteboard desks for scratch
work or use the online tool Desmos, if needed.

E Description
The teacher will review answers to #5 and #6 after 8 minutes of working time.
Then, the teacher will lead 2-word problems (that are Christmas-themed) and let
the students complete the last one independently.
The teacher will model how to plot two of the coordinate points on the graph.
The teacher will then have students complete this activity with a partner.
Students will go to the teacher’s desk to check answers once they are done. This
way, the teacher can have 1:2 time with students. Students will glue this activity
sheet into their Math Journals and use it as a reference for future graphing
problems.

The teacher needs to explain this will be graded and hung up in the hall during
the rest of December. They will also explain the rubric for how it will be graded.
Elaboration
Objectives 6 and 7 – For homework, students will be able to use a computer
program to plot and label ordered pairs of whole numbers in the first quadrant.
Students will be able to use a computer program to interpret and solve
mathematical and real-world problems by plotting points in the first quadrant of
the coordinate plane.
They can also use the Desmos graphing program on their Chromebooks or their
whiteboard desks if they need a visual.
For this task, students will use their Chromebook to access Blooket.
Students will then go to Clever. They will go to Blooket and find the graphing

review activity.
Once complete, students will print brochures and turn them into the teacher for
feedback.
