1-Course Description and Overall Aims:

The aim of this course is to improve the student's ability to understand and to
communicate efficiently (orally and in writing) in Business English. Also to enhance the
student's English grammar, the usage of business vocabularies, and to improve his skills
in translation, writing business letters, reports, and curriculum Vitae "CV".

Course Aims:
This is a one semester course given on three hours lecture weekly. The mains of this
course are:

A. To enhance the ability of students of level one with the skills of English language
including listening, speaking, reading, writing.

B. To learn translation of different texts in the context of business i.e. management,


communication, banking, economics, marketing etc…

C. To provide the students with the principles of effective communication with


emphasis on oral and written aspects including oral presentations and
demonstrations, writing techniques of business letters, memos, reports,
employment communication including job hunting sources and methods,
techniques of CV and interviews etc.

2-Intended Learning Outcomes of the Course


(ILOs):

(A) Through knowledge and understanding, students will be able to:

(K1) Understand the basics concepts, methods, styles and skills for
planning and writing business letters, business reports and
covering letters.

(K2) Format and layout business documents for both domestic and
global business using various tools and techniques.

(B) Through intellectual skills, students will be able to:


(I1) Use essential abilities through intellectual skills for planning and
writing business messages, business essays and articles, routines
through different techniques.

(C) Through professional and practical skills, students will be able to:

(P1) Apply the necessary techniques through practical skills and


practices to build up their career in writing CVs, applying and
interviewing for job in addition to forming different layouts of
employment documents for both the local and the international
markets.

(D) Through general and transferable skills, students will be able to:

(G1) Apply oral communication including interpersonal communication


principles through transferable skills and methods including
presentations exercises and models, in order to and enhance
students’ oral conversation.

3-Course Outline:

Week Number 1: English language and grammar round up

Week Number 2: English for Domestic and International Business with emphasize
on British vs. American

Week Number 3: Comprehension and translation, and summarizing business articles


mainly business topics.

Week Number 4: Communication process and its components including business


barriers and directions.

Week Number 5: Interpersonal communication including the four main skills with
emphasize on oral presentations and face-to-face communication.

Week Number 6: Effective communication and its elements.

Week Number 7: Midterm Evaluation + Types and elements of business


communication; verbal (oral and written), non verbal (mainly
body language) and visual.

Week Number 8: Writing business communiqués and the process of writing


including drafting, revising, formatting, and proofreading.

Week Number 9: Formal business writing including business letters with emphasize
on writing for a satisfactory transaction.
Week Number 10: Formal business writing including Memorandums (I.O.M) and
different types of business reports.

Week Number 11: Continuing Business memos, and reports letters which are not
directly connected to business i.e. goodwill letters… etc.

Week Number 12: 12th week Evaluation + Types, arrangements style of business
communiqués.

Week Number 13: Communication for employment; where and how to find a job ?,
job vacancies, and requirements, and covering letters.

Week Number 14: Developing of Curriculum Vitae (CV) (Résumé) and application
letter for employment.

Week Number 15: Interview Techniques for employment including how to prepare
yourself (before and during the interview) self for a
successful interview.

Week Number 16: Final Examination

4-Teaching and Learning Methods:

Lectures with power point technique.
