Sandeep Jain is holding a senior management position of Executive Director with a


leading Public Sector Undertaking which is listed in the Fortune Global 500.

A Civil Engineer from Thapar University, Patiala, he has done a Certificate Course in
senior Management (Leading & Managing) from IIM Calcutta. He has a vast cross-
functional experience spanning every facet of the energy business. During his
more than three decades of service, he has worked in Northern, Western & Eastern
regions of the country and has held several leadership positions. He is also on board
of number of subsidiary companies. He is presently based at Delhi.

He has made vital contribution in the field of Oil & Gas in both Indian an international
business leading large teams. He is known for his decisive and result oriented
leadership & unconventional management style, often transforming teams to achieve
the desired goals. He is a strategist and a leadership enthusiast.

He is a keen sports lover, an amateur golfer, and an avid reader.

Preface

The journey of authoring this book has been a transformative experience. It


has pushed me to delve into uncharted territories, questioning conventional
wisdom, and seek fresh perspectives. It is my sincere hope that the pages that
follow will ignite a spark within you, dear reader, and inspire you to embark on
your own voyage of exploration and discovery.
It is a pure work of fiction, with the protagonist waging a war against the
system, ably helped by his angel guide, his school-time sweetheart, who is
now a management expert. It is the story of a crusader fighting corruption and
the demons of his past to redeem himself, especially when the odds are
stacked against him. He is helped by his beautiful love interest, with whom he
has an imperfect relationship. It is a story where a professional battle against
the immoral becomes a personal fight against evil.
The protagonist, during the pursuit of his crusade, follows many untraditional
ways that hover around the thin line between ethical and unethical means to
achieve just ends. Management thinkers, practitioners, students, working
managers, and many in leadership positions may find these unconventional
strategic management mantras, negotiation skills, and leadership traits quite
interesting and worth exploring.
There is a typical work culture in the leading PSUs that is generally
perceived to be very complacent and laid-back, but the reality is entirely
different. The top PSUs have been able to compete with the best in the industry
due to their competent work force comprised of competent professionals,
experts, and visionary leaders. These PSUs are playing a vital role in taking
this nation forward. However, these companies are also not absolutely free
from corruption, regional biases, succession wars, political influences and
interferences, power plays, and other fallacies.
Quite often, while performing the call of duty in certain fields, life-threatening
situations are faced by PSU officials. While the defence, police, and civil
services have their appropriate recognition in the public eye, these lesser
mortals— the PSU officials—remain unsung heroes, though they perform no
less critical roles at times. Efforts have been made to bring out their sterling
public role by weaving a story around it. Their lives are not always as boring as
they are generally perceived to be. They also have their own share of love,
betrayals, depressions, distress, uncertainty, diffidence, conflicts, etc.; efforts
have been made to entwine these to shape up a narrative. An endeavour has
been made to show all the possible aspects and viewpoints. A thorough
amount of research has been carried out to bring the story closer to reality.
The nation has not forgotten the martyrdom of real hero Manjunath, a sales
officer in the largest national oil company in the country, who laid down his life
in the fight against adulteration and other malpractices in 2005. Though this
book is not the story of Manjunath but is a tribute to him; a brief part is
dedicated to a similarly drawn plot. He has been both an inspiration and a
provocation.
Besides, there is a love story with an imperfect relationship between the
protagonist and his angel guide, though they are deeply in love with each
other. Their relationship takes a curious and unexpected turn, which binds the
reader till the end. Even the manoeuvring of personal relations by the
protagonist to turn the situation in his favour for professional gains is also one
of its kinds. Inherent fears and insecurities, behavioural variants under different
circumstances, and the highs and lows of life have also been portrayed.
Suspense until the climax has been maintained on a few fronts to keep the
reader wondering and guessing throughout about the probable ending.
With utmost excitement and anticipation, I invite you to turn the page and
embark on this mystic journey.
